It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Christmas in Kansas City is a truly magical time of year. This year, celebrate with traditional events including the Kansas City Repertory Theatre's production of A Christmas Carol, a visit with Santa at Crown Center and the Kansas City Ballet's The Nutcracker as well as new events the entire family will love including many living nativities, live shows, and festivals. This is your 2013 Guide to Christmas in Kansas City.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas Nov 26 - Dec 28, 2013 at Theatre for Young America at Union Station 30 W. Pershing Kansas City, MO. This new play based on the beloved holiday poem brings to life the wild holiday adventures of a mouse, an elf, and a spunky little girl on their quest to find out why Santa missed their house last year.  This joyful tribute to the holiday season was created by renowned playwright Ken Ludwig, winner of 3 Tony Award nominations for his plays on Broadway. Night Before A Christmas Carol at Mid-Continent Public Libraries. Join Charles Dickens in his study for a very special night. On this evening in 1843, he creates his holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol." Renowned Dickens scholar, author, playwright and lecturer, Elliot Engel has crafted a work that allows David zum Brunnen to portray the 17 "Christmas Carol" characters and Charles Dickens himself. Canadian Brass: A Holiday Concert Dec 2, 2013 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts 1601 Broadway Kansas City, MO. Christmas Opera for Kids Dec 3, 2013 from 7:30 pm until 8:30 pm at St. John's United Methodist Church 6900 Ward Parkway Kansas City, MO.  Join us for two Christmas operas sung by undergraduate members of UMKC’s Conservatory Opera Workshop at St. John’s United Methodist Church. The two featured operas are "Good King Wenceslas" and "St. Nicholas".  This is an excellent way to expose your children to a joyful and whimsical opera experience. It is also a great way as a family to enjoy the traditional Christmas carols of the season!

The Mystery of Christmas Dec. 6 - 8 at Liberty Performing Arts Center 1600 S Withers Rd Liberty, MO. Twenty Five years ago, a young ballet teacher dreamed of a Nutcracker Ballet that actually told the story of Christmas. Creator and Artistic Director Liz Dimmel states "I was on my way to see the Nutcracker and mentioned to my husband, 'wouldn't it be great if there was a Nutcracker that actually told the Christmas story?'"  The production includes the classical music of Tchaikovsky, appearing angels, a teenage pregnancy, war between two kingdoms, a birthday celebration and a little girl discovering the importance of following her heart.

Heart of America Christmas Pageant  Dec. 6 - 15 (Fri-Sun each week) at First Baptist Church of Raytown 10500 East 350 Highway Raytown, MO. During the first two weekends of December annually, more than 600 First Baptist family members present the story of Christ’s birth, life, death and Resurrection. 19th Celebration of Santa’s Wonderland Nov 27, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Gates Plaza on the Twelfth Street Heritage Building 12th and Brooklyn Kansas City , MO. Traditionally, holidays are symbolic with hot cider, presents and wonderful uplifting music, however  some children  in the underserved sections of the  Kansas City community families are struggling to meet basic needs which leaves a tremendous void during the holiday season. Twelfth Street Heritage Development Corporation is honored and privileged to provide the “19th annual Santa’s Wonderland” event to meet a significant gap in the community. Cumulatively, our organization has provided more than 17,000 children with a special toy, bike, doll or small electronic. “We’ve  touched the lives of so many children over the years because of the generosity of local businesses and corporations”, stated Dwayne Williams, Executive Director. Registration is not required, however it is recommended that families assemble as early as 3pm. The event will feature live entertainment, local celebrities and the  annual lighting ceremony of the Gates Plaza on the Twelfth Street Heritage Building, located at 12th and Brooklyn. 

Santa's Arrival at Crown Center Nov 29, 2013 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Crown Center Square 2450 Grand Blvd. Kansas City , MO. Santa Claus arrives in a horse-drawn carriage to kick off the holiday season. Perry the Penguin, Casey Bear and other costume characters help greet Jolly Ol’ St. Nick. Santa's Crayola Christmas Land Nov 29 - Dec 31, 2013 at Crown Center Shops, Level 1 Showplace 2450 Grand Blvd.Kansas City , MO. Children can play on super-sized Crayola products, while waiting to tell Santa all their holiday wishes. Santa is in residence November 29 through December 24. Santa Train Rides Saturdays Nov 30 - Dec 7, 2013 at Belton, Grandview, & Kansas City Railroad 502 E. Walnut St. Belton, MO. Santa is coming back to visit the Belton, Grandview, & Kansas City Railroad this year. Santa will ride along for a 45 minute train ride, will visit with guests, and will stop for photos if you wish, all while the train moves down the track. Be sure to bring a camera! Sing songs and talk to Santa about activities at the North Pole. After the train, Santa will await the kids in a different train car, so little ones may sit on Santa's lap to share Christmas wishes. He even has a small gift for the children. The Railroad will serve hot chocolate and a cookie for each passenger. The Gift Shop will be open too! Reservations are required! There will be no ticket sales on the day of the train ride. Reservations are processed in the order they are received. Only 50 seats are available per train and they sell quickly. The cost is $14 per passenger three years and older. All tickets will be handled on a "will call" basis, and can be picked up on the day of the train ride.

The Christmas story performance features larger-than-life Wise Men, each with three church members inside to move the puppet figure and arms. A Christmas Eve candlelight service, including communion, will also be held at 11 p.m.

Holiday Lighting Ceremonies

Liberty Community Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Nov 21, 2013 from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm at Historic Liberty Missouri. The evening’s events will culminate with the flip of a switch turning on the thousands of lights trimming the historic buildings around the square. Free cookies and hot chocolate will be available. This event serves as the kick off for the Liberty Community Christmas Tree Program. Donations will be welcomed to help support the LCCT, which lends a hand to disadvantaged Liberty families and seniors during the holiday season. In 2012, the Liberty Community Christmas Tree provided food and gifts to 273 families with 699 children and food to another 135 households. The Community Christmas Tree coordinators are working to raise $30,000. Celebrate the season of giving by providing a monetary donation at the lighting ceremony to help disadvantaged families in Liberty.

Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting: Overland Park Nov 22, 2013 from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm at Historic Overland Park Clock Tower 7315 W. 79th Overland Park, KS.  Cypress Springs cordially invites attendees to park in their lot or on the street and ride to the Tree Lighting in their warm, toasty bus! Mayor's Tree Lighting: Lee's Summit Nov 22, 2013 at 6:30 pm at Downtown Lee's Summit Main Street. Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads will flip the switch to light the Mayor’s Tree and all of downtown on Friday, Nov. 22. This event is one of the area’s favorite holiday traditions. The ceremonies begin at 6:30 p.m. in Howard Station Park in Downtown Lee’s Summit. Ryan Lefebvre, Royals announcer, is the master of ceremonies. This year’s annual event features free hot cocoa, cookies and live performances. Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves arrive via fire truck to visit children at Howard Station Park; so bring a camera to take photos with Santa. Carriage rides also will be offered for a fee. Don’t forget to visit participating Downtown businesses, which will be open until 8 p.m.

Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony: Kansas City Nov 29, 2013 from 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm at Crown Center Square 2450 Grand Blvd. Kansas City , MO. The 100-foot-tall Mayor's Christmas Tree, one of the nation's tallest, is the centerpiece for an illuminating holiday celebration. Mayor Sly James and Kansas City's Tech N9ne will flip the switch to light the tree. The tree is a symbol of the Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund, which is dedicated to assisting the city's less fortunate. After the holidays, the wood from the Mayor's Christmas Tree is made into commemorative ornaments, which are sold the following year to benefit the Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund.

Storybook Adventure – ‘Twas the Night Before Fishmas (Daily): Trace the telling of a popular holiday story throughout the aquarium with a special SEA LIFE twist. Enter to win free SEA LIFE Annual Passes. This activity is available daily.
Fishmas Carol Singing (Weekends): From time to time our SEA LIFE Carolers (also known as “Coralers”) will be strolling the aquarium singing some holiday songs that are slightly different than those you’ve heard before. It won’t be long before your family is singing along to “Jelly Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Fishmas”.
COST $19 adults (ages 13 and older), $15 children (ages 3-12), toddlers 2 and under are free.

Each day, one of our team members will secretly hold a Santa Minifig. To own Santa, bring a MINIFIGURE to trade with our staff.   If you trade with the team member who is secretly holding Santa, you get to keep him! Weekends (Saturday & Sunday): Santa’s Turbo Sleigh Challenge – visit our build and test area and help Santa design an even faster, high-performance sleigh.  Events will be hosted 3 times each Saturday and Sunday and prizes will be awarded for most creative sleigh and fastest sleigh. And of course, a chance to do some holiday shopping for all things LEGO in our retail shop!  Stop by to learn about the great purchase incentives and holiday sales we will have throughout the season.

Park Place Winter Warm-Up Nov 21 -24 at Park Place 11551 Ash Street  Leawood, KS. The second annual “Winter Warm-Up” returns to Park Place, kicking off the holiday season with four days of holiday festivities Nov. 21-24, 2013. Activities kick off with holiday open houses, seasonal decorations and special activities throughout the unique stores, restaurants, and health and beauty destinations; many of which are locally owned or exclusively found in Kansas City at Park Place. “Winter Warm-Up” continues with activities throughout the four days including the sixth annual opening of Johnson County’s only outdoor ice skating rink “The Ice,” horse-drawn carriage rides around Park Place, strolling Dickens Carolers, charitable partners, and seasonal promotions.

Weston's Festival of Trees thru Nov. 23 at 507 Main Street, Weston. MO. A Raffle Benefit to help support The Day of Hope, an event to provide services and Christmas for Platte County families. Alexander Majors Holiday Programming Nov 21, 2013 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Alexander Majors House Barn 8201 State Line Road Kansas City , MO. The Alexander Majors House will launch its holiday programming by dedicating and presenting its restored grand box piano built in 1870, an important part of the Majors House collection and history.  For the two years, Dr. Bruce Prince-Joseph, the Museums' Honorary Music Director, and cellist and pianist James Upton have been restoring the piano, which is in the north parlor room of the Majors House.  Now in his late 80s, Dr. Bruce Prince-Joseph was the lead organist, harpsichordist, and pianist for Leonard Bernstein’s New York Philharmonic for over twenty years.  Dr. Prince-Joseph will formally dedicate the piano to the Majors House, demonstrate key aspects of the restoration process, and do a musical performance with local vocalists Victoria Caine and the Reverend Jeffrey Hon. Tickets are $20 per person.

Holiday Celebration at the Nelson Thanksgiving Weekend at the Nelson Nov 29 & 30, 2013 at Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art 4525 Oak Kansas City , MO. On Friday, the 29th enjoy Dinner and Live Music at Rozzelle Court Restaurant, a Family-Friendly Cabaret Performance from 5-6 p.m. Repeats 7-8 p.m. And, the Promenade Illuminée (Luminary Walk) from 5-9 p.m. in the Donald J. Santa's Gingerbread Village Nov 29 - Dec 31, 2013 at Crown Center 2450 Grand Blvd. Kansas City , MO. Three locomotives travel through a Santa’s gingerbread village in the North Pole, all created by the chefs at The Westin Kansas City and Sheraton Kansas City hotels. See the reindeer stable, Santa’s sleigh garage, the elves’ dorm, a doll, rocking horse, and ball factory, and even Mr. & Mrs. Claus' home.

Family Holiday Candlelight Tour Nov 29, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum 4000 Baltimore Kansas City, MO. Celebrate Christmas Eve in 1922 Westport at the Harris-Kearney House Museum as prominent residents from Westport and Kansas City history will gather to celebrate the holiday and give thanks for the successful events of that year.  This family-friendly event will include a tour of the gaily decorated mansion by candlelight, a visit with Julia Kearney Wornall, Joan Crawford, Walt Disney, and other friends.  Make a Christmas decoration, enjoy period games, and much more.  Tours begin every 15 minutes and refreshments will be served.  Call 816-561-1821 for more information, or to make reservations.  Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Spirit of Christmas Past Tour Nov 29 - Dec 30, 2013 at Independence, Missouri Historic Sites. Celebrate the Holidays in the Spirit of Christmas Past. The elegance and beauty of the Vaile Mansion is a perfect setting for "Fashionable Victorian Christmas," while "Spirit of Christmas Past" is celebrated at the Bingham -Waggoner Estate.  At the Marshal's Home, "A Simple Old Fashion Christmas", enjoy the charming warmth of the 1850s home decorated simply with homemade wreaths, ribbons and ornaments.  Package price includes lodging accommodations for one night and two adult tickets to each site (lunches and optional activities are not included).

Breakfast with the Fairy Princess Nov 30, 2013 from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm at Zona Rosa 8640 N. Dixson Avenue  Kansas City , MO. Children are invited to meet the Fairy Princess during an intimate, enchanted breakfast in The Grove at Zona Rosa.  This annual event features holiday entertainment, a child friendly breakfast menu, and a special gift from the Fairy Princess. Advanced tickets are required for this event and will be available at Zona Rosa Guest Services beginning November 1st to the General Public. Cost is $5/person for members; $6/person for non-members (Chris Cakes will provide pancakes). Holiday Maker Village in Science City that day, featuring holiday craft and making activities.

Whoville Holidays Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on November 30, December 7, 14, and 21 at City Market 400 Grand, Suite 428 Kansas City, MO. The Grinch will be present for photos between the hours of 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and Noon- 1:00 p.m. Whoville Holidays will be located at 400 Grand, Suite 428 at Northeast corner of the City Market. Whos of all ages are encouraged to bring their camera to get a picture with the Grinch in the warmth of Cindy Lou Who’s home.   Little Who’s will enjoy the Whoville Holiday children’s activity area where they can make Whoville themed tree ornaments, a Grinch mask and more! On opening day, Saturday, November 30, the first 20 children to arrive dressed in their “Who best” will receive a special holiday prize pack! Shopping Adventure For Children Dec 7 & 8, 2013 from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at C.W. Parker Carousel Museum 320 S. Esplanade Leavenworth, KS. Children 3-13 years old are invited to do their own holiday shopping for family and friends in a secure environment.  Parents pay $3, $5 or $7 for each person on the child's gift list.  Elves assist each child with their gift selections and the selected gifts are then wrapped, labeled and ready to be placed under the tree.   To complete their shopping experience each child receives a free ride on the 1913 carousel, (photo op) a bag of reindeer food and admission to the Kid's Craft Corner.   While waiting for your little shoppers enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and browse through the  gifts, crafts and baked goods available for purchase. Gifts are $3, $5, or $7.

It is rumored that Santa is going to hide hundreds of candy canes around Cornerstone Park! Christmas in the White House Dec 14, 2013 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm at Truman Presidential Library 500 W. US Hwy. 24.  Independence, MO. Archivist Tammy Williams takes you inside America's most exclusive address for a peek at the Truman family's celebration of Christmas at the White House. This intimate holiday portrait is painted with photographs, letters, Christmas cards, and sound recordings from the Truman Library's extensive collection. This presentation is one in the series of "Talkin' Truman" programs, offered each Second Saturday at 11 a.m. The program is included with Museum admission; seating is first come, first served.
