I know it doesn’t feel like spring is here, let alone that May Day is just around the corner. But it’s true! And if you’re like me, any hint of spring is something to celebrate! So, let’s go ahead and give some thought to May Day, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day flowers. I of course enjoy a store bought bouquet of lovely flowers anyday (right, honey?) – but I am going to encourage you to create something of your own. It is a great opportunity to get outside with the kids, and trim some branches from your yard and get creative.
I am a huge fan of upcycling glass jars. I never throw away salsa or pickle jars. I used to soak the lables off, but my new trick is to run them through the dishwasher, and usually the lable just peels right off. I saved up a bunch and this weekend knew just what to do with them! I bought the happiest, most cheerful yellow spraypaint I could find. I sprayed several light coats over the jars. (The key is light as the paint drips easily, especially on glass). Once it was dry Gracie and I trimmed several branches from our blooming Bradford pear tree. (Am I the only one that thinks those flowers stink? They’re gorgeous, but I will admit I left my new arrangement outside on the patio table! Now, when the lilacs come out, that would be a great one for the dinner table!)
You just stick the branches in whatever arrangement suits your mood, and voila! A darling arrangement to leave on a neighbor’s doorstep, give to mom, etc. Enjoy! This spring will be especially sweet once it comes and stays for good!
