  • Teaching Responsibility With a Forgotten Homework Assignment

My kindergartener came home on Friday with her first homework assignment.  That’s why I found myself resisting the urge to run to her school on Monday afternoon.  Let me explain.

Though my daughter was eager to do her homework, she wasn’t exactly keen on my idea of putting her finished assignment in her bag so she would remember to take it on Monday.  She insisted that she wanted to carry it separately.  (It was a ...

  • I Can't Believe I Wasn't the Last to Know!

A few months ago, Amy Hilbrich Davis of Inspiring Moms, mentioned Groupon to me while I interviewed her for an article.  I'm glad she did.

Earlier this summer, I signed up for Groupon.  I started receiving emails of their daily deals.  One day the deal was for a restaurant on the Plaza.  I paid $15 for a $30 gift certificate.  The certificate didn't expire for six months so I figured we'd squeeze at least one ...

  • The Things I Will and Won't Miss About Summer Time with My Children

Well, the first day of school is finally here.  I chuckled as I read a friend’s facebook update.  She mentioned that she isn’t excited to send her kids back to school this year so in order to get ready she is reminding herself of the things that she won’t miss about having all her kiddos home around the clock.  I decided to follow suit.

In no particular order, here are the things I will NOT ...

  • We Chose Not to Participate in the Summer Reading Programs

I truly can't remember a time when I didn't love reading.  I love everything about reading.  Libraries and book stores are among my favorite places.  My favorite way to spend time with my children is to read with them.   In addition to many wonderful picture books, we've shared a few chapter books this summer.  I know I'll always treasure those used paperbacks that I read aloud from as we took two long road trips.

    Since I love ...

  • What is the Balance of Extracurricular Activities?

I'll admit it; the idea of entering a new stage life with our first school-age child is all but consuming my thoughts right now.  I know I’m probably being a bit dramatic, but it just seems too soon!  I’ve done quite a bit of reminiscing this summer and I’m just not ready to be missing one of my kiddos during the day!  Sure, we’ve had plenty of tough and exhausting days with three children born in a ...

  • Beating the Back to School Morning Blues

I used to be a morning person.  Then, I had children.  Now, the thought of being anywhere before 9 or 10 a.m. makes me tired.  I’ve loved that all summer we’ve only had to be somewhere “early” a handful of times.

So, you can imagine it made me a bit anxious while at school registration to realize that my daughter would be starting school before 8:30 a.m. each day.  Okay, so I knew that school started ...

  • Sometimes It's Easy Being Green

Around our house we dutifully recycle and usually take our reusable shopping bags to the grocery store.  We even started a little garden this year and have the tomatoes to prove it.  However, after being around some family members who are extremely “green,” I realized we could be doing a lot more.

About a year ago I stopped buying paper towels.  I noticed that when I had them I would use a roll very quickly.  ...

  • Two Days in St. Louis

We recently left St. Louis already talking about what we’d do the next time we visited.  I guess that means it was a successful trip!

In less than two full days, we visited The Magic House, the St. Louis Zoo, and the Gateway Arch.  We were fortunate to time everything perfectly, so I figured I might as well share a few tips on family fun in St. Louis.

Our first stop was The Magic House...

  • A Free Packing List Makes Getting Ready to Travel Easier

I dread packing.  I like taking trips, but I really, really dread packing.  Now that I have three children, I have more packing to dislike.  Therefore it's no surprise that I'm happy to find ways to make this task a bit more pleasant.

Last Fall, I had the privilege of hearing Brenda Mott of Momtourage speak.  I signed up for her email newsletters and it was in one of those that I stumbled across one ...

  • Summer Outings

My oldest child starts school in August (sniff, sniff).  Thinking about this makes me realize how intentional I want to be with my time with my young children.  (I'm trying to enjoy every moment, though I admit that the recent transition of my youngest to a "big girl" bed has been a bit of a challenge.  I'm just not a fan of 4 a.m. wake up visits!)

There are exactly seven weeks left until my ...

  • Handling Those Long Days

Some days are longer than others.  Of course, they all are made up of 24 hours, but there are days when those hours move oh, so very slowly.  Recently, one of our summer days was a long one.  Between the hot weather and children who woke up on the wrong side of the bed, it was a crazy day!  As I reflected back on the day, I realized that I've learned a few things that ...

  • Thoughts on Swimming with My Children

On a recent family trip, we were blessed to wake up to a beautiful day of sunshine.  The temperature was about 70 degrees and there was a cool breeze.  It was the perfect weather to enjoy spending time outside hiking or visiting the park.  It wasn’t exactly swimming weather, but that’s what we ended up doing.

Being a parent sometimes means I have to break my general rule of not swimming unless it’s near 90 ...

  • Balance Map Review and Giveaway

My youngest daughter loves to walk on the balance beams at parks.  Of course, since she is only two, she needs to hold my hand as she walks on that narrow line.  Being a mom is sort of like being on a balance beam.  I know that as a mom, I’m always trying to walk that fine line in so many areas of my life as a mom, wife, sister, friend, etc.  Now, thanks to the ...

  • A Change of Plans

Is it just me or have we had more than our fair share of rain? Okay, I won’t complain about it, however, I will mention that I was a tad disappointed that we had gray weather this weekend.

On Sunday night, we decided to head out to the Kansas City Hot Air Balloon Invitational. We’d had word that the balloons were still going to launch so we loaded into the car. About a ...
