  • Spring Cleaning with Me!?

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that today, after working in the kitchen, I had to dry my hands with a terry cloth baby bib.  There wasn’t  a single clean towel or rag in my kitchen drawers, so I had to settle for a bib that my children haven’t used in quite a while.  Of course, I have a perfectly good excuse for being caught without a clean towel…I’ve been cleaning!  No, seriously.

        It started ...

  • More Than an Insect

I was relieved I wasn’t talking face to face with my friend as she told me about her daughter’s favorite pet.  It seems her young daughter’s guinea pig injured its eye.  She was planning on taking the little thing to the vet later in the afternoon.  She was nearly beside herself with worry that the vet wouldn’t be able to help her daughter’s beloved creature.  I admit I was a little bewildered at her concern ...

  • A Perfect Ending to a Tough Day

We were only minutes away from bedtime and still, I thought I wasn't going to make it without seriously losing it.

I looked at my oldest and asked her to come sit on my lap. I held her for a minute and told her I was sorry I was a bit short during the day. She told me that was okay and apologized for having a rough day as well.

          Then, she sweetly ...

  • Being a Parent Means Sometimes Pink Lizards Are Important

Before I became a parent, I never would have rejoiced at finding a pink plastic lizard on the sidewalk.  Yet, this is exactly what I did recently as I found my five-year-old daughter’s most current prized possession.

Our morning had been a busy one.  Our first stop was to drop off my son at preschool.  We then ran two different errands before meeting up with some friends to play at Chuck E. Cheese.  After blowing ...

  • Date Nights In

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.  Nothing like stating the obvious, right?  So, do you have a date night out planned?  I don’t.  However, I am considering a date night in with my hubby.

Date nights out are wonderful.  Please don’t think I don’t appreciate them or don’t think they are important.  However, for us, they don’t happen without a lot of work and money.  We have to find a babysitter who is available.  ...

  • Interrupted

I had the best of intentions of sitting down and writing a post about date nights.  Specifically, I was going to write about having date nights “in” or at home.  Of course, the key word is “was.”  It didn’t happen and here’s why…

All day I looked forward to the season premiere of LOST.  My husband was volunteering at church, so I got to put the kids to bed solo.  Though I desperately wanted to ...

  • "Mommy, Watch Me!"

Countless times each day, my children ask me to watch them do something.  Sometimes it’s something they’ve never done and I share in their excitement, but oftentimes it’s not.

Recently, my son insisted that I watch him while he jumped around kicking his legs.  He then put his hands on the floor and did some sort of donkey kick.  I did my best to look really impressed and hope he didn’t realize I was more ...

  • They Won't Always Be So Small

It seems I can’t go anywhere without someone either telling me how full my hands are with my little ones or reminding me of how quickly the time passes.  Typically the latter comment makes me a bit sad. (Usually it depends on how my children are behaving at the moment.)  However, I’m guessing that for the most part, I’ll miss being surrounded by silly little preschoolers each day.  Of course, I would have been more than ...

  • Serving Dinner

I had to take a deep breath as I recently heard one of my children exclaim, “I don’t like it! “  She added, “I took a bite and I just don’t like it.”

The thing she didn’t like was a new recipe I had tried out for dinner.  I was especially disappointed since I was sure the new dish would be a winner.  In hindsight, I probably should have eliminated the black pepper and more finely ...

  • Positive Thoughts on Snow

Well, the snow has been around for nearly two weeks.  Our front yard is sporting a snow fort and a snow man.  Various bits of winter outerwear are hanging up to dry.  I’ve gotten a good workout by helping little ones in and out snow clothes many times.  In short, I’ve had my fill of snow for the time being.  Unfortunately, the weather report disagrees.

As I write this, the Kansas City area is predicted ...

  • Celebrating My Birthday

If enjoying celebrating your birthday as a grown up is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
I recently had another birthday. As I enjoyed my day, I thought of friends I know who don’t like to make a big deal about their birthdays. In fact, they’d prefer if everyone would just forget they even had a birthday. Not me.
My birthday started out with my sweet children handing me flowers my husband had cleverly ...

  • A Crazy Christmas List

I’ve learned a couple of things this holiday season.  First of all, I learned that you shouldn't’t ask your children what they want for Christmas after you have already bought their presents.  Second, I learned that I will likely never understand what goes on inside the head of a little boy.

A few nights ago, after reading some Christmas stories to my preschoolers, I asked them what they would like for Christmas.  I really should ...

  • A Very Happy Early Birthday Present

As a mom of three young children, my days are filled with many not-so-glamorous tasks. My clothes often reflect the nature of my job. These days, it's rare that my outfit stays clean all day. Usually hand prints or runny noses find their way onto my shoulder or pant leg. Most of the time that's okay. The end of the day generally finds me with my husband finishing up the day's duties as we put ...

  • Silver Dollar City at Christmas

All week we wondered whether it would be worth it. Saturday morning we decided we'd give it a try. I continued to wonder whether it would be worth it as I packed clothes, snacks, entertainment for the car, a single stroller, and a double stroller.

Finally, just before noon on Saturday, my husband and I were in the van with our three young children. We were headed to Branson to check out An Old Time ...

  • The Third Time is a Charm

As I stood in line waiting to check out, I looked down at my youngest child who sat in her stroller. I noticed she didn't have socks on and didn't think too much about it even though it was late November. At least I didn't think much about it until I looked back up and noticed an older woman looking at my daughter. I thought I saw her glance at my daughter's feet, so I ...
