Diapers, whatever their shapes or stripes, are big business--to the tune of some 3,650 diaper changes a year per baby! So cloth or disposable? It pays to reframe the terms of the debate, deciding what the various trade-offs are worth for you and your family.

Choosing to breastfeed your baby is an intensely personal decision, a decision that should not be made without an understanding of the valuable benefits breast milk can provide for you and your infant. After all, the benefits don’t stop when your child is weaned.

Do you miss the sun throughout the winter but in the summer months feel like you should live in a cave to protect your infant’s delicate skin from the sun? You are not alone in your frustration. A cave may not be necessary, but the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says that sun protection should begin in infancy and continue throughout life.
However, the AAD warns, “It may only take 15 minutes of midday summer sun to burn a fair-skinned (child).” Dr. Aundria Speropoulos, a pediatrician at Child Care Limited in Kansas City, MO, also warns parents, “Infant skin is more likely to burn in a short time. I have seen infants with second-degree burns (blisters) to their faces because the parent thought the baby would be safe on a cloudy day at a sibling’s soccer game.”

The first few words out of our children’s mouths, such as mama and dada, are like little warm drops of sunshine on our spirits. But do you have the same feeling about the word “no”? The ubiquitous word creeps into a child’s lexicon before most any other word and while it quickly ranks as a top favorite for many a toddler, parents find this stage of a child’s development frustrating and challenging.

If you and your children have never experienced thrush, you probably know someone who has. Common as it may be, it’s still an infection which must be addressed by a medical provider. Thrush is a yeast commonly found in our digestive systems, but an over-abundance can develop into an infection and be troublesome for baby and breastfeeding mothers.

A vasectomy might seem like a strange place to begin a baby story, but you could say our story began there. My husband had a vasectomy in 1999 after the birth of our third child. Three children seemed a little radical to us in the two-child world where we lived at the time, and we opted for a vasectomy after number three without much thought.

August 1st through 7th marks the 18th-annual World Breastfeeding Week. Since the celebration began nearly two decades ago, the body of research on the benefits of breastfeeding has been growing every day. For baby, these include an easier transition from womb to world, improved emotional and physical development, and protection from asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and some childhood cancers. For mom, breastfeeding can help with post-pregnancy weight loss and provides her with protection from breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.

For mom, breastfeeding can help with post-pregnancy weight loss and provides her with protection from breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. In light of these benefits, many mothers strive to meet the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation to breastfeed for at least a year. In order to achieve that milestone, I advise expectant moms to take the following steps:

For weeks I stressed, spent sleepless nights, and bored my husband, friends and dry cleaner about my concerns of transitioning our daughter from the crib to a bed. I envisioned her bounding out of her room once I fell asleep, hurdling the baby gate and opening the fridge rapidly stuffing as many choking hazards into her mouth as possible. After absorbing everyone’s advice and speaking with our pediatrician, I unearthed some great tips that made this transition one of the easiest we have encountered in my daughter’s continually changing world.
