If you’re looking for a way to bond with your family, teach good values and get involved with your community, now is the time. Once reserved for high-schoolers looking to beef up their college applications, community service opportunities now abound even for grade-school children. And it turns out that giving back is good for kids as well as the community. A ServiceLeader.org report claims that kids who volunteer are less likely to use drugs and skip school, and that volunteerism “promotes healthy lifestyle and choices, enhances development, [and] teaches life skills.”

If your son or daughter is entering 11th grade, this will be their year of taking the SAT or ACT. But the question is, will they be taking it just once, or should they retake it several times, maybe even helped by a test prep class? According to the College Board, which administers the SAT, the average student who retests increases his or her score by approximately 40 points, statistically a fairly small amount. Is it worth the effort?

Raise your hand if you're a mother. Ok, now raise your hand if you are the mother of teenagers. Here's the big one, raise your hand if might not have had children if you had known how difficult teenagers can be. While my teens are often a source of delight, and yes, even amusement, I won't deny that I sometimes wish I could skip the ages from 12-20 with my kids.
