ALERT: Heat Prompts Hospital Hill Run to Reschedule 5k Event for 7 a.m. Saturday
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Hospital Hill Run announced today that its 5k run is being rescheduled for 7 a.m. on Saturday morning due to high temperatures expected at the originally scheduled time.
“After much thought and consideration, our team decided it is in the best interest of all those involved to reschedule our 5k run,” said Beth Salinger, Hospital Hill Run’s race director. “The 5k run was originally slated to take place on Friday evening, but weather forecasts are calling for extreme temperatures in the mid to high 90s, which has our organization concerned for our runners, supporters, staff and volunteers.”
Hospital Hill Run anticipates approximately 2,000 participants in the 5k run who will join runners of the 7.7 mile and half marathon races on Saturday morning at the Crown Center start line.
“The safety of our participants, attendees and volunteers is our No. 1 concern,” said Dr. Margaret Gibson, Hospital Hill Run’s medical director. “The American College of Sports Medicine provides recommendations for participation in endurance events with high temperatures and humidity, which is information that has informed our decision. The forecasted temperatures Friday afternoon and evening will place even well-conditioned, well-acclimated runners at very high risk of heat related illness.”
