SHOT IN THE STREETS: THE DEATH OF ARCHIE CLEMENTS
Join us in downtown Lexington as we recreate the attempted capture and death of infamous guerilla and outlaw Archie Clements. On December 13, 1866, Clements was ambushed by state militia at a hotel in Lexington, Mo. The fight entered the streets as Clements attempted to escape. “Scalping Archie” Clements suffered 34 bullet wounds. He died trying to fire his last bullets. His last words are quoted as, “I’ve done what I’ve always said I would do…die before I surrender.”
Relive the mayhem at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The action starts at 1015 Franklin Avenue and ends at the Lafayette County Courthouse. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Missouri State Parks, Lexington Tourism Commission, Elliot Scouts and Big Muddy Ice Cream Company.
