Just a short drive from Kansas City, Parkville, Missouri, makes the perfect family day trip when you want something that feels easy, charming and just a little bit tucked away. With its historic downtown, local shops and restaurants, riverfront park, creative studios and wooded nature trails, Parkville offers the kind of outing where you can slow down, explore and let the day unfold.
Stop 1: Stroll Through Historic Downtown Parkville

Start your day in Historic Downtown Parkville, where the walkable streets are lined with local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, bookstores, murals and plenty of small-town charm. It is the kind of place that invites you to wander with no strict agenda.
We treated ourselves to pizza at Grand Canyon Pizza, then strolled the adorable streets, admiring the murals, flower-filled corners and historic storefronts. One of the unexpected highlights for my little guy was watching the train come through town up close. It was one of those simple, memorable kid moments that made the whole stop feel extra special.

Downtown Parkville is also a great place to browse local shops, grab coffee or plan your visit around one of the community’s seasonal events. ParkvilleMO.org
Stop 2: Play and Wander at English Landing Park

Just across the tracks from downtown, English Landing Park is one of Parkville’s best family-friendly destinations. This spacious 68-acre park sits along the Missouri River and offers plenty of room to walk, play and relax.
The crushed gravel trails loop through scenic riverfront views and under big shade trees, making it a great spot for strollers, scooters or a leisurely family walk. The park also includes playgrounds, pavilions, benches, dog park areas, sports courts, picnic spaces and lots of open room for kids to roam.
English Landing Park is also home to the Parkville Farmers Market, which makes this an especially fun Saturday morning stop. Pick up local produce, baked goods or seasonal finds, then stay and enjoy the park. You could easily spend an entire afternoon here without running out of things to do. ParkvilleFarmersMarket.com

Stop 3: Get Creative at Imagine Studios KC

Feeling creative? Head back toward downtown and stop into Imagine Studios KC. You can’t miss the cheerful, colorful storefront, and inside you’ll find a welcoming space for hands-on art fun.
Imagine Studios offers paint-your-own pottery, fused glass, pottery wheel experiences, classes, events, parties and kids’ art camps. It is a great option for families who want a break from walking or need an indoor activity on a hot, cold or rainy day.
Whether your child wants to paint a mug, try something new or simply enjoy a colorful creative space, this stop adds a fun change of pace to a Parkville day trip. ImagineStudiosKC.com
Stop 4: Hike to the Waterfall at Parkville Nature Sanctuary

End the day with a little adventure at Parkville Nature Sanctuary. This hidden gem was new to me, and I truly couldn’t believe more people don’t talk about it. The sanctuary offers a peaceful, wooded escape with shaded trails, streams and a waterfall that feels like a surprise tucked into the Northland.
The trails are more of a hike than a simple walk, so this is not the most stroller-friendly stop. That said, with a sturdy jogging stroller and a little determination, we made it work. Less than half a mile from the trailhead parking lot, we reached the waterfall, and it was absolutely worth the effort.
Kids who love exploring, climbing, spotting nature and finding “secret” places will love this stop. Just wear good shoes, bring water and know that the terrain is better suited for walking kids, baby carriers or adventurous stroller-pushers. ParkvilleMO.gov/Nature-Sanctuary
