June is the perfect time of year to get out and about. So why not pick a beautiful day and enjoy a streetcar date?
Stop 1: City Market/5th & Walnut
What started out in a one-room butcher shop in the East Bottoms is now a delicious eatery called Pigwich in the historic City Market. They offer delicious burgers; crispy chicken and BBQ sandwiches; cheesesteaks; fries; and house-made chips. They’ve even got a yummy vegetarian falafel sandwich. Several years ago, the restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri, plus special guest Andy Reid. And for good reason — Pigwich is top-notch. Inside and out, you’ll find picnic-style tables, friendly service and a cozy, honky-tonkish vibe — along with a heaping helping of good food. Also on site is a meat market selling pork, chicken and beef, and an artisan food shop called Local Pig that features locally raised and locally sourced items.

Stop 2: Library/9th & Main
When was the last time you visited the Kansas City Public Library downtown? Maybe never? If so, I highly recommend taking at least 30 minutes to explore it. It’s a century-old former bank building with marble columns, bronze doors and ornate moldings that greet you outside. Inside, you’ll find modern additions on all five above-ground floors, interesting exhibits and a coffee shop. Plus, the basement contains an old bank vault that’s been converted into a 28-seat movie theatre that shows free films every afternoon. Maybe you can take one in while you are there! Things not to miss: The kids’ area, which is like a colorful storybook; and the rooftop, where you’ll find a life-sized chess set. Sneak in a game or two while you are up there or just enjoy the view. Back outside, don’t forget to check out the Community Bookshelf on the side of the library’s parking garage.
Stop 3: Union Station/Pershing & Main
For mouthwatering and creamy frozen custard, head to Sheridan’s at Crown Center. There you can choose from concretes, sundaes, shakes, smoothies, cups and cones. They even have cakes and pies by the slice. Whatever you choose, I guarantee it’ll hit the spot. And depending on how many calories you consume, you can walk some of it off afterward. Crown Center has a number of fun stores for browsing and plenty of walkable areas. If you take the skywalk over to Union Station, you can get in even more steps and extend your date.
