The year 1985 was truly unforgettable—not just because it marked the Kansas City Royals’ first-ever World Series victory led by George Brett, but also because KC Parent Magazine was born. The 1980s were a renaissance for magazines, with many specialized titles emerging to cater to niche audiences. Although Michael and Susan Gimotty were not involved with KC Parent at its inception—both were still in high school at the time—the magazine’s founding mission was clear: to support families in raising caring, responsible young people while helping them create lasting memories right here in Kansas City. In a time before the internet, finding parenting advice and local family resources wasn’t as easy as it is today.
Fast-forward to 2005, when Michael and Susan acquired KC Parent Magazine. Guided by shared family values, entrepreneurial spirit, and a deep love for Kansas City, they embraced the opportunity to carry the publication forward. A few years prior, they had launched KC Baby & Maternity from the ground up and were eager to expand their impact in the local parenting community.
One of their first major changes was transforming KC Parent into a glossy, magazine-sized format that was easy for busy moms to grab and go. Under their leadership, KC Parent has continued to grow—adding publications like KC Going Places and developing a robust digital presence through KCParent.com, weekly eNewsletters, and social media. The online and print calendar has remained a beloved reader favorite, offering families a trusted guide to local events and activities.
Over the past two decades, the Gimottys have raised four children and cherished the experience of parenting side by side with their KC Parent readers. For Michael and Susan, and their incredible team—some of whom have been with them for nearly two decades—it has been deeply rewarding to play a role in connecting and strengthening Kansas City families.
