When I was a teenager, my family took a weekend trip to Rockbridge Trout Farms that included fly-fishing in a quiet stream in Missouri. I remember the productive struggle of learning to cast the long line, the exhilarating moment of a tug from a fish bite, and the success of my catch. It was fascinating to see how the trout farm prepared the fish for us to take home after our weekend excursion. We had fresh trout for weeks! That trip left a lasting impression on me, and now, as a parent, I find myself seeking out those adventures for my kids.

Agritourism, where farms and ranches open their gates to families, is one of the most memorable ways to do just that. In and around Kansas City, these immersive experiences are growing in popularity, and they offer the perfect blend of fun, learning and unplugged time together.
Kaw Valley Farm Tour
The Kaw Valley Farm Tour is Kansas agritourism at its finest — every first full weekend in October, farms across the Kaw River Valley fling their gates open to families, foodies and curious souls alike. This self-guided, two-day adventure offers everything from pumpkin patches and apiaries to award-winning vineyards and more. Many of the farms have information about their kid-friendly activities, but you can also find just about anything from cashmere to cut flowers, honey bees, syrup and Scottish cows. Here are some highlights in Kaw Valley available during the Farm Tour, as well as throughout the year.
Blossom Trail Bee Ranch
At this ranch, families can experience the full charm of a working apiary: wander among field bees, peek into honey-filled hives and learn about the delicate art of beekeeping. Guests of all ages delight in sampling honey from the comb, seeing bees at work and exploring the farm’s beeswax, eggs and other farm-fresh products.
KC Parent Pro Tip: Speaking of honey, you have to get it from the farm. This winter I tasted the real stuff for the first time and I am never going back. Pure, golden honey is smooth, vibrant and full of nuanced flavor that store-bought versions just can’t match.
Ad Astra Alpacas
Ad Astra Alpacas, just south of Baldwin City, is a charming, family-friendly stop where you can meet a herd of nearly 40 alpacas — many of which are named after stars! Families can book a guided tour to feed, pet and learn all about these gentle animals, their eco-friendly habits and their super-soft fleece.
Compass Prairie Art Farm
Compass Prairie Art Farm, just outside Eudora, is a one-of-a-kind blend of vibrant flowers and local art. Families can wander the u-cut flower fields to create their own colorful bouquets from a mix of prairie blooms and garden favorites. The farm also features outdoor sculptures and a working art studio where recycled farm tools become butterflies and blooms.
Farm-to-Table Restaurants
Kansas City’s farm-to-table dining scene is thriving, offering fresh, seasonal meals that celebrate the region’s agricultural roots. These dining spots connect diners with the land in the most delicious way.
Wandering Vine at the Castle
Did you know there is a castle nestled right in the heart of Shawnee? Wandering Vine at the Castle offers a wonderful farm-to-table dining experience. Their menu features local, seasonal ingredients and an award-winning wine list.
KC Parent Pro Tip: Ask to be seated on their beautiful outdoor patio. On a recent visit, my mom, grandmother and I loved the unique experience of dining outdoors at the castle. It made my grandmother’s trip to Kansas City feel extra special!

Rye
Rye in Leawood is a standout in Kansas City’s farm-to-table scene. Dishes are crafted using ingredients sourced directly from farms in Missouri and Kansas — think seasonal produce and top-quality meats like smoked pork chops, aged steaks, baby back ribs and fried chicken. My husband and I are convinced Rye serves the best cinnamon rolls in KC.
Local Pig (PigWich)
Local Pig and PigWich are Kansas City staples known for sourcing all their meats from local, humane farms. The butcher shop, Local Pig, has earned national praise — including a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. At PigWich, their on-site sandwich shop, you can taste the difference in every locally sourced, flavor-packed bite.
Coffey Grounds Farm
Coffey Grounds Farm in Stilwell offers a deliciously down-to-earth farm-to-table experience. With the purchase of a ticket, guests can enjoy seasonal dinners and cooking classes, featuring ingredients grown right on the farm — all in a beautifully restored horse barn. From vibrant produce to pasture-raised eggs, everything is fresh, local and thoughtfully prepared.
KC Parent Pro Tip: Don’t miss their charming “Teapot Tuesdays” and monthly High Teas, where sweet treats and tea pairings are served in a cozy, rustic setting.
Rural Retreats
For an overnight agritourism experience, try Isinglass Estate in La Cygne, Kan. — a sprawling 600-acre winery resort that mixes elegance with rustic charm. There are six different places to stay, but most notably, families and couples can stay in one of their signature covered wagons! On-site activities include horseback rides, catch-and-release fishing in estate ponds, live music at the tasting room, dinner at the GastroPub, lawn games and a petting zoo featuring baby pigs, goats, sheep and more.
Hidden Valley Wilderness Retreat in Easton, Kan., offers a serene getaway for guests ages 12 and up, with a unique opportunity to stay in a luxurious treehouse perched above shaded creeks and woodland trails. Each treehouse comes equipped with all the modern amenities. Teens and adults can unplug on walking trails, relax by fire pits and soak in nature’s peaceful beauty just a short drive from Kansas City.
Agritourism in Kansas City and the surrounding region offers families a chance to slow down, get their hands a little dirty and create lasting memories in beautiful settings.
