Christmas Traditions in KC

by

Christmas is a magical time of year, and Christmastime in Kansas City is no exception. Perhaps you are drawn to the traditional pastimes of your own childhood, or maybe you’re looking for a fresh take on holiday traditions to start with your own family. Either way, you’ll find a multitude of options in KC for your family this holiday season.

The Kansas City Zoo has a few programs to delight your children—and your inner child as well—including Holiday Wild, Santa Dives, Winter Wonderland and Zoo Year’s Eve. And, Kansas City’s amusement park, World of Fun, hosts WinterFest, a holiday extravaganza with live shows, character meet-and-greets, holiday lights and traditions.

Holiday lights are always a fun pastime during the season, so check out Holiday Lights at Farmstead Lane at Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead in Overland Park, KS, for their show synchronized with music. Or head to Paulie’s Penguin Playground in Olathe and help raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

Legends Outlets Kansas City is home to one of the city’s most unique lighting displays a 45-foot holiday tree created by a world-renowned technology-driven holiday lights team, all synchronized to music.

You’ll see the Mayor’s Tree at Crown Center Square beginning with a ceremony the Friday after Thanksgiving. The ceremony includes fireworks choreographed to music. The 100-foot-tall tree is adorned with 7,200 lights.

In Lee’s Summit at I-470 and View High Drive, you can visit the Lee's Summit Magic Tree lit with more than 12,000 LED lights in every color of the rainbow. And, a visit to Kansas City at Christmastime would not be complete with out seeing the 80-miles of lights at the Country Club Plaza.

With so many options for fun in KC during the holidays, be sure to put a few on the calendar—but also remember to leave some space to enjoy a peaceful season with your family and friends! You’ll find even more opportunities with our annual KC Christmas Fun Guide.
