Holiday Luminary Walk (Photo above) Nov. 25 & 26; Dec. 2 & 3; Dec. 9 & 10 from 5-pm at Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens 8909 W. 179th St., OPKS. Cost: eTickets $9; $10 at the door; Children 5 and under free. Stroll down candlelit trails through the gardens and woods at the 17th annual Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens' Holiday Luminary Walk.  This major fundraiser features a mile of candles, holiday lights, live entertainment, Santa Claus, horse-drawn wagon rides, hot cider around a campfire and mystical Gnome and Fairy Villages. Volunteers and staff members are transforming the Arboretum into a wonderland of candles and lights, music and holiday fun. Thousands of candles line the walkways and trails. Holiday lights will be on display from trees, buildings and bridges.Children will be thrilled to see Santa's Woodland Depot in the Train Garden and chat with him nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Gardens by Candlelight: A Luminary Walk Dec. 10 & 11 from 5-7:30pm at Powell Gardens 1609 N.W. U.S. Highway 50, Kingsville, MO. Cost: The event is free for members and included with regular garden admission for all others. Enjoy the yuletide spirit with a stroll through the Gardens aglow with the light of hundreds of luminarias. The path will take you across the Island Garden, where you can warm your hands over a fire before moving on to the peaceful holiday beauty of the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel. Take the trolley back to the Visitor Center to see the Christmas Couture display, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, make and take a luminaria craft, and warm up in the cozy comfort of the Grand Hall with a glowing fire and live jazz. Enjoy hot chocolate and complimentary homemade cookies (while supplies last).

Fall Lantern Walk Nov 6, 2016 at 5:15pm at Shawnee Mission Park 7900 Renner Rd, Lenexa, KS.. Bring the whole family and join The Littlest Birds Music Together and Tinkergarten as we celebrate the end of daylight savings time and chase back the night with lovely lantern light! We will gather at dusk to sing songs, light lanterns, and go on an evening walk together. Make a lantern at home or bring a flashlight. 

Sar-Ko Aglow - Dec. 2 from 6-9pm at Sar-Ko-Par Park, 87th Street Parkway & Lackman Road, Lenexa, KS. Kick off your holiday festivities this year by meeting up with friends and neighbors for a community celebration at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park for Sar-Ko Aglow. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with the lighting of Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. Bundle up and enjoy a stroll through the park while taking in the spectacular lights, sipping hot cocoa and listening to carolers. Santa will also be on hand to hear children's holiday wishes (look for Santa on the circle driveway). Also, plan to stop by the Legler Barn Museum while enjoying the festivities. The museum will be open during the event.

​13th Annual Winter Solstice Torch-lit Hike Dec. 14 from 5-6:30pm at George Owens Nature Park, 1601 S. Speck Rd., Independence, MO. Walk down a woodland path lit by torches to an ice sleigh, telescopes and a bonfire. Bring your camera for photos in the ice sleigh; view the night sky; see live owls; and drink free hot chocolate. The first 150 will receive free travel mugs. 

Winter Solstice Celebration Dec. 17 from 6:30-8pm at Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe, KS. $6 per person, including adults or $8 on site day of event. 9137647759. Take a break from the busy holiday festivities as we walk through the woods, along little Cedar Creek to witness the natural display of winter’s quiet time. The trails will be lit by luminaries. Warm up by the fireside and listen to star stories about the longest night of the year. Visit live owls and discover animal mysteries of survival during the long winter. Gather round for campfire treats of toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate. Please note: Portions of this program will be outdoors, please dress for the weather. Advance reservations recommended.
