Visitors to Kansas City frequently comment that the city is cooler and better than they expected for a city in the heart of the nation. As a lifelong native, I loved my hometown before loving it was cool—but I’m thrilled to see the progress Kansas City is making and that others are #KCProud too. The beautification, the new attractions, the improvements to beloved favorites and the successes for the Kansas City Royals, Chiefs and Sporting KC are all helping to put KC on the map as a great place to raise a family and a great place to visit.

From an exciting urban center where updated shopping and entertainment districts are thriving, to growing suburban areas with new attractions opening almost every month, there is something for everyone.

My family is especially excited to be cheering for the 2015 World Series champion Kansas City Royals as they return to the K in April. We love that koalas are visiting the Kansas City Zoo this season, and we’re planning trips to Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead with friends.

Summer is also festival season in Kansas City. If asked to choose a favorite, I’d have to say it’s impossible! Each festival has its own trademarks that make it truly special. My family makes it a tradition to attend Celebration at the Station, my husband loves Maker Faire, and I’m a fan of Strawberry Swing and the local community festivals and ethnic fests. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art throws a party like none other, and their Big Picnic is a not-to-be-missed summer event. Powell Gardens’ Festival of Butterflies is such a beloved favorite for my daughters, we make it a tradition to attend as many days of the festival as we possibly can, taking new families and friends each time we go.

This time of year is also a favorite for fresh produce from our local farmers markets, where you can meet the grower, choose the best and enjoy live entertainment and festival fun at many markets. You’ll find a guide to local markets here and can find “Farm-to-Table Dining” also to discover local restaurants known for serving the tastiest in locally grown foods.

These are just a few of the things I enjoy about Kansas City. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places.

Welcome to Kansas City! We’re happy you’re here and we hope you love it just as much as we do!
