Autumn is Coming!

by

Are you ready for Autumn?  Get ready, the weather pattern is changing and just in time.  Fall arrives Saturday September 22nd at 9:49 A.M.  Its going to feel like it.  When the sun crosses the equator this weekend, the temperatures will be in the 40s, the winds will light, the skies will be sunny and hopefully some early color will be showing up in the leaves.

What will this Autumn be like weather-wise?  Early indications point toward some cooler than average temperatures, and October can have some chilly days and nights.  Average October daytime highs start out in the low 70s at the start of the month and fall into the low 60s by the end of the month.  Below average temperatures may feel especially cool compared to summer.  This past summer we suffered through 6 heat waves, two of which lasted more than ten days.  We hit 100°, 20 times between the middle of June and the end of July.   The hottest day was 106° on July 18th.

Not only was it hot, it was a dry summer.  Just under five inches of rain fell between June 1st & September 1st.  That left many lawns and shrubs looking shaggy and brown.  If you are planning to aerate and over seed your lawn then plan on watering.  We are still in a drought and it may take until December to break it.  In other words, Autumn will likely continue the drier than average trend.

The weather pattern will continue to evolve over the next several weeks and by early November the Winter weather pattern should begin to set up.  What will it look like?  Will it be snowy, cold?  Its too early to tell.  I will do a blog in the next couple of weeks explaining some natural indications that can be used to help predict what type of Winter we will have.  It involves squirrels but I swear to you, the theory isn’t nuts.

Happy Fall!Brett
