“Not just a bookstore, it’s an experience!” reads the slogan of the I Love a Mystery Bookstore… and how true it is! The store, tucked in the shops of Mission, is a mystery lovers dream come true. Decorated as a Victorian bookshop filled with mystery memorabilia from favorite detective board games, to Sherlockania collectibles, to fun nooks including the office door of the famous Sam Spade and a great kids’ section, this is one store every avid reader should visit.

From the moment you set foot in I Love a Mystery, you'll know you're someplace special. After your initial greeting by one of the resident gargoyles, you'll be welcomed by a member of the staff. Each staff member is extremely knowledgeable and able to recommend books for any interest. Mystery features many subgenres from international to historical, culinary to crafting, to everything in between. Young readers will love a new mystery as a fall gift and they have a great stock for children and teens. From Richard Scarry’s Busytown Mystery Picture Books for the very young, all the way through classics like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, to new favorites from Anthony Horowitz to The Sisters Grimm and many more. The store is also very supportive of local writers, carrying their work and hosting signings, including Nancy Pickard, Joel Goldman, Sally Goldenbaum, Michelle Black, and Jim Butcher.

I Love a Mystery hosts regular book club meetings for free. There are some clubs parents and teens may enjoy together like the new Sherlock Holmes book club, as well as clubs for every mystery interest, perfect for a Moms' Night Out.

If you're looking for a unique gift for the bibliophile in your family, I Love a Mystery offers Book-of-the-Month club where readers receive a new book each month in the mail selected by the staff using clues you provide to indicate taste.

While you're there... walk down the road a bit and stop by Werner's European Specialty Sausages for authentic European sausages (hot off the grill on Thursdays), or dine at one of Kansas City's original hamburger joints, Town Topic.

Kansas City is home to many wonderful bookstores, but this one is my all time favorite! If you haven't been to I Love a Mystery, you're missing out.

Kristina Light really does Love a Mystery... especially on a crisp autumn day!
