Shelter Dog Month One of our favorite ways to care for dogs is by adopting a pet, volunteering or supporting Great Plains SPCA, one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in the Kansas City area. GreatPlainsSPCA.org.

Cookie Month With a mission to “bring family and friends together over a box of the best cookies in the world,” Crumbl Cookies is known for unique flavors that rotate weekly. You’re sure to find something you love.

Oct. 3: Frugal Fun Day Kansas City is home to many great free and cheap attractions. Search “50 Ideas for $5 or Less” on KCParent.com for inspiration.

Oct. 5: World Teachers Day Do something extra special for your teachers today. Make a card, write a poem, give a thoughtful gift and let them know how much they are appreciated.

Oct. 6: Mad Hatter Day To observe some wacky fun, visit KidScape at the Johnson County Museum, which features many great play areas for kids, including a dress-up collection with a variety of hats and accessories and a fun stage where kids perform shows in their dazzling costumes.

Oct. 13: Fossil Day Offering a variety of educational hands-on exhibits, Science City at Union Station offers super-saurus fun at their Dino Dig. Kids are able to observe fossils, then get in on the action by playing in an artificial archaeology dig site.

Oct. 31: Caramel Apple Day Our favorite local shop for decadent caramel apples with all your favorite toppings is Sweet Caroline’s.
