Strawberry Picking in Kansas City

Strawberry picking season is here! May means strawberries in the Kansas City region. You’re sure to enjoy a trip to one of these local patches. Always call ahead or watch Facebook for picking announcements to enjoy the best berries of the season as hours may fluctuate based on picking from previous days.

Please pull in the gravel driveway on the east side of the house to avoid getting stuck. Other than that let's have fun picking strawberries. The season is winding down so don't delay. We would highly recommend Buckeye Acres in Warrensburg and Farhmeier Farms in Lexington. We should be back in the strawberry business next season. We are going to use the current strawberry field for our pumpkin patch this fall. We cannot wait for everyone to see what Matt has up his sleeve this year for the Red Barn Ranch!

Posted on their Facebook page 5/21/18:  We still have LOTS of ready to pick strawberries in the field. We will be open daily 9 am to 5 pm. These warmer temperatures will make the berries ripen fast, possibly making our strawberry season shorter, so don't delay come see us soon. For the 2018 Season, Field Access is $3 per person, children 24 months and younger are free. Field access includes a hayrack ride to the strawberry patch and the kid's activities which include, the bouncy pillow, low ropes course, and the rat race. Come make a day of it out here at the orchard! We will also be offering a Family Summer Pass which will be $25 and will expire August 31, 2018. This will allow you to come out to play and pick our other fruits this summer. U-pick quarts are $5 and flats are $28. Pre-picked strawberries are available upon request and availability of staff! Strawberry Picking Tips

• Strawberry plants are low to the ground—the perfect height for toddlers and preschoolers! Be prepared for stooping and bending over.
• Dress for a mess! The u-pick patches are as "tidy" as a farm could possibly be, but let's face it, you are bent over in the dirt picking juicy berries. Dress in comfortable tennis shoes and jeans/shirts meant for working in a garden.
• Bring wipes for messy fingers.
• Be prepared for photo ops! Strawberry smiles make super cute scrapbook photos.
• Bring bottled water (and perhaps snacks, too, depending on your lunch plans).
• Plan to spend an hour at least.
• Teach your children that "redder is better" when it comes to strawberries. Leave the green behind; they are still growing!
• Bring a cooler and ice to keep berries fresh on the ride home. You may want to bring a few plastic containers that fit properly in your cooler for the berries.
