Burr Oak Woods is one of the largest nature centers in the area. With an animatronic Smoky Bear teaching children fire safety, a large aquarium of Missouri's fresh water fish, snakes, turtles, toads and more--and wonderful hands-on educational exhibits for children--Burr Oak Woods is a great place to spend an afternoon. The nature center also features miles of beautiful trails for walking or bicycling. With acres of wooded nature trails, ponds and more, Burr Oak Woods is an ideal setting for a fall walk or bird watching.

One of the biggest treats at Burr Oak Woods in the fall is watching the wild turkeys and other birds. Kids today hear a lot about turkeys in November, but how many have actually seen a live turkey? Before Thanksgiving Day, take the children to Burr Oak Woods to see the wild turkeys. While on your hike, also be on the lookout for deer and other wildlife. Count how many you see, then visit the library to check out books and learn more about turkeys.

The Little Acorns programs for preschoolers and the family nature programs, offered throughout the month at Burr Oak Woods, are FREE and fantastic. Be sure to pre-register for the program by calling 816.228.3766
