Getting Your "Only" Ready to Become the "Oldest"

Much to my surprise, there is still more to prepare for with the arrival of a second baby than I might have once given credit to.  Sure, we have the infant car seat, the play gym, teethers, rattles, bottles, and blankets.  But with our “only” turning two just 3 months before baby brother arrives, there are still many things to consider. Whether or not to keep her in a crib or move her now to a twin bed was one of those things to consider. After much prayer and counsel from both sides, we have decided that borrowing a crib would be (we pray) the best option for our daughter.

Something more pressing than the sleep issue, however, is the obedience issue.  Let me explain.  I have started allowing Ava to walk with me more in stores (instead of just putting her in our stroller). I ask (and require) that she holds my hand when we’re walking in stores, and that she stays right with Mommy always.  In just a few short months, baby brother will be in a stroller or car seat, and I will need to depend on Ava to obey my voice and what I’m asking her to do (or not do).

When the second baby comes around, there is a real sense that we are grieving our “baby” getting bigger, while at the same time, asking him or her to grow up a little for us.  It’s a strange place to be in, really.  I’m asking much more of Ava these days….please bring Mommy a clean diaper, go put your shoes away, can you get your bib out of the drawer, etc.  Encouraging some independence, while heavily focusing on obedience to Mommy, is what I’m focusing on to prepare her for the changes that will be coming shortly, and if I’m honest, it will help prepare me for the reality of life with 2 as well.

How do you work with your children to obey? Is this something that you emphasize at your house, or are you just the opposite?
