Good Night Traditions

I’ve been a mama for exactly five and a half years.  During that time, I don’t believe I’ve ever sung “Rock a Bye Baby” to my children.  "Jingle Bells?"  Yes. Many, many, many times.  Even in July.

From the time my oldest daughter was one until a little after her fourth birthday, she requested two songs each night.  Every single night, I found myself singing the alphabet as well as “Jingle Bells.”  Her little heart was simply set on those two songs.  After a while, it just became tradition.

A few years later, my husband and I now count to 100 before our son goes to sleep.  He prefers counting to the “biggest number in the world” over singing.  Our youngest daughter always wants to hear us sing the alphabet as well as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”

Besides stories, songs, and prayers, it’s not unusual for an elephant kiss or two to happen at bedtime.  Gross?  Of course, but it’s also silly and sure to get a laugh or two from someone in our little family before we head to bed for the night.

Our bedtime traditions may not be the most traditional, but they are special to us.  Isn’t that what counts?

So, what does bedtime look like for your family?  Are your children old enough that you send them to bed with a quick hug?  I have to admit, I secretly hope my children never stop wanting to be tucked in, even if they do outgrow the elephant kiss phase.  (And I truly hope they do as they dole these out more often than not.)

I hope it’s a good night, however that looks in your home!
