There are a handful of restaurants that elicit a truly joyful response when it is announced that we're going out for dinner. Culver's is one of those.

Culver's is quick cuisine that doesn't feel like fast food. Maybe it's because you sit down after placing your order and it is brought out to you by a very friendly server. Maybe it's the family atmosphere. Or maybe it's because the chain has it's roots in Wisconsin, the friendliest state in the Midwest.

My favorite is their Avocado Pecan Blue salad. ($6.99) I'm a huge fan of blue cheese, and I think I once read that avocados and nuts have the ‘good' fat. Right? It's a win-win situation! One of these days I'm going to try their grilled Reuben melt ($5.49). Chicago natives love a good Reuben! My husband prefers their specialty, North Atlantic Cod basket. ($7.79) Since I've never learned to prepare fish, he's learned where he can order the fish he craves without being disappointed.

ButterBurgers are better burgers, this according to my twelve-year-old expert who would gladly eat cheeseburgers five nights a week. ($4.99) Adults might appreciate that you can build your own burger with a dozens toppings to make it your own. I wonder if mine will ever venture past cheese and ketchup.

We always save room for dessert at Culver's, even if we have to take it home and put it in the freezer to finish tomorrow! Fresh, smooth and rich frozen custard with chunky bites of bliss, sundaes and shakes or for those special occasions- a frozen concrete cake!
