Give What You Can
I know that I usually blog about savvy shopping and money saving tips, but this week I feel compelled to write about how important it is for each of us to give what we can to humans in need. I know you have all read about the earthquake in Haiti and likely you have seen disturbing and sad images of the aftermath of such a horrible disaster. Often when I hear of a natural disaster with casualties and devastation beyond my comprehension, I feel helpless. The need is just SO great. And though we are very blessed to have a roof over our heads and the ability to provide our family with the things we need and want, we don't have endless resources to donate. So I think, "Is it even worth it? Do they even need my measly sum?" Our donation would just be a tiny drop in the bucket of need. But...that is what a bucket is filled with...little drops of water! Even if I don't have a lot to give, I want to give what I can in a situation like this where humans are suffering and desperately needing basic things like food, water, and medical attention.
I know that it is also hard to know where to send your money so that you can be assured that it's actually making it to the people who need help. There are definitely scams out there, so make sure to donate only to trustworthy charities and never give your credit card information out over the phone to someone who calls you claiming to be from a charity. Here are a few organizations that you can trust with your donation...and I know there are many more!
AmeriCares is nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization which provides immediate response to emergency medical needs – and supports long-term humanitarian assistance programs – for all people around the world, irrespective of race, creed or political persuasion. They already have teams on the ground in Haiti and they have pledged at least $5 million so far in emergency medical relief. I have a friend that works for this organization and they are truly amazing!
The Red Cross: We all know the Red Cross is a great organization...and donating can't be easier! Just text HAITI to 90999 and a $10 donation will be added to your phone bill.
Heart to Heart International is a local organization that is mobilizing for a major response in Haiti.
So whether it is one of these great organizations or another one of your choosing, donate whatever you can. Even if it's just a few dollars...your donation helps! AmeriCares has said that for every $1 donated, they can get $35 worth of vital aid to the people of Haiti!
