Hereford House

Hereford House is a name that is synonymous with a great steak. It may not be on your list of "kid-friendly" restaurants but Rod Anderson, the owner of this "Kansas City Original" is out to change your way of thinking. The kid's menu at Hereford House restaurants five metro wide locations includes ten options for children ages 14 and under. Each of these menu items include a fresh fruit cup or salad, a beverage (including milk or juices), choice of steak fries, baked potato or fresh vegetables and a scoop of ice cream with Oreo toppings for dessert. Two of the selections come in two different sizes, taking into account older children may have larger appetites.

You may be thinking that these choices must be pricy. Not necessarily so. Kid's meal prices range from $3.95 for a PB&J, a 4 oz. steak burger, grilled cheese sandwich or a char-grilled hot dog to a maximum of $11.95 for twin 4 oz. grilled filet medallions wrapped in bacon or a 10 oz. serving of prime rib. These menu items are the same as options on the regular menu, but with lower prices. Children may also select from salmon, grilled chicken, classic chicken fingers (in two sizes) and steak burgers (also in two sizes).

Rod designed the kid's menu based on the tastes and changing appetites of his own children and others he knows. He noticed that older kids want and need larger serving sizes, so that's why many of the menu options come in different sizes. As the mother of a twelve-year-old son who is often turned off by the idea of ordering from a ‘Kid's Menu," this is something I appreciated. He also has learned that if food is prepared well and tastes good, some kids will try (and like!) it even if it's non-traditional kid fare.

When Mom and Dad are looking for a night out or a quick dinner before a movie, consider their very affordable Happy Hour Elite menu. Most locations offer special bar dining menus from 4-6:00 with items ranging in price from $4.50-$8.50.
