KC Parent and Children's Mercy Asthma Twitter Chat: May 11 at Noon
A couple of years ago we were at a yearly checkup for my younger’s allergies. The doctor asked me how long she’d been coughing and I answered about a week, I figured she had a summer cold. After checking her over and running some tests, she was diagnosed with asthma. Mom of the year here for missing the symptoms!
Asthma is a lung disease with recurring episodes which cause wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing. It's one of the most common long-term illnesses in children. An average of one of every 10 school-aged children has asthma, and each year they miss 13 million school days. It is also the third-most common reason children under 15 go to the hospital. Seasonal allergies can quickly cause asthma flare-ups, and unfortunately, thanks to recent weather patterns, this year's allergy season is more intense than usual.
