Meet Shimika Kennison

You’ll certainly never run out of fun things to do in Kansas City, but it’s the people that make this city extra special. One such person is Shimika Kennison. This local mom is wife to former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver, Eddie Kennison. They have two sons. In addition to family life, Shimika is very active with QUICKSTART-The Eddie Kennison Foundation. The Kennisons started the foundation in 2003. More recently, Shimika opened her own cosmetology school, Entourage Institute. The Kennisons decided to make Kansas City home, believing it to be a great place to raise a family. Kansas City Parent Magazine had a chance to talk with Shimika to learn more about this hardworking local mom who proves that you can call Kansas City home without loving barbecue!

KCP: Tell us more about your charity work with QUICKSTART-The Eddie Kennison Foundation.

SK: We raise money for lupus research. I was diagnosed with lupus in 2002. We work with The Alliance for Lupus Research. The money goes to research, and we know it is in good hands. We do different events to raise money.

KCP: Is volunteering a family event?

SK: Yes. This past year’s football season, we went out for the first game. Before the game, my 9-year-old son raised more than $100 by walking around the parking lot explaining that his mom has lupus and that he was helping to raise money for research. They also modeled in the fashion show event.

KCP: In addition to your charity work, you and your husband also own Entourage Institute. What is your mission for your business?

SK: Entourage Institute is a cosmetology school. I started the business because it was very challenging for me to go out and work after I was trained as a cosmetologist. I didn’t feel like I had all the skills needed, especially the business skills. This is a way to teach others and make women feel beautiful.

KCP: What professional advice do you have for parents?

SK: Find something that you love and that helps others. Financial gain will follow. Also, research, research, research!

KCP: How do you balance your work life and family life?

SK: This has been the biggest challenge. My husband supports me. He’s Mr. Mom. I’m learning to delegate.

KCP: As a mom who has been around professional sports, do you have any advice for young athletes and their parents?

SK: Just focus on the positive. Keep God first.

KCP: What is your favorite fall family activity in Kansas City?

SK: We like to go on bike rides around our neighborhood. We also like to go down to the Plaza and walk around.

KCP: Where do you like to eat?

SK: My sons would say they like raw sushi. My husband and I like Capital Grille. I’m not a big barbecue fan, but my husband likes Oklahoma Joe’s.
