Old Wives Tales

Being 1 can be tough if you get sick. Sure, it's great to be cuddled and held a little longer (and not that we Moms mind that part AT ALL!), and maybe you can get away with just eating Goldfish crackers since you don't feel well. But as far as medicine goes, forget it! There really seems to be nothing "safe and tested" for kids up until age 2 or 4, depending on what you're looking at.

My daughter recently came down with a wake-you-up-in-the-night type coughs, and I'm left to simply cuddle her upright in our glider all glossy-eyed at 3am, hoping to bring her some relief from the coughing spat that is keeping her up. It makes me think about some of the "old wives tales" that I hear my grandma talk about....raise your arm when you're coughing or choking, tie a towel around your head when you have a headache, and take a butterknife and literally mash down a bump on your head to get it to go away. CRAZY!! But, it seems I'm willing to resort to some of this if it will help my daughter.

I recently heard that honey could be helpful with a cough, and it's at least something she can actually take! Of course, before age 1, she was warned not to ingest honey for fear of botulism, but now that we're 15 months, bring on the honey! So, any truth in honey helping keep a cough at bay? Do you have another idea to share that has worked for you with little ones and night-time coughing?
