Elephant and Piggie's "We Are In A Play" at The Coterie - Summer 2019

by

My family holds a special place in our hearts for Mo Willems'  Gerald and Piggie books. So many books for early readers are dull and lifeless. Others are long and wordy. Willems' books are in a league of their own, simultaneously introducing early words while telling humorous stories with delightful characters.

Willems' Gerald the elephant, ever the worrier, and Piggie the piglet, ever the optimist, are best friends who face daily life with an enduring, witty, and warm spirit. They demonstrate unconditional love, friendship and fun to young audiences.

My girls love Gerald & Piggie more than any of Willems' other beloved characters (the pigeon, Knuffle Bunny, the monster, etc.). The humorous duo is loveable and relatable. My youngest loves them so much, the characters have been her chosen theme at more than one costume party.

When we learned that The Coterie was producing Elephant and Piggie's "We are in a Play!" (showing June 11 - August 4, 2019) my girls were thrilled! We headed to the show... some of us even in our fan gear!

The musical opens with a jazzy duet starring the two pals, Gerald, played by Coterie alum Jake Walker, and Piggie, played by another Coterie favorite, Shon Ruffin. They enter singing "Lucky to See You," an upbeat song perfectly introducing their bond.

The show continues to share classic Gerald and Piggie scenes with upbeat music, costumes paying homage to Willems' storybook art, vibrant sets, and dances.

My girls loved the Swimmy, Fancy! the song inspired by the I Am Invited To A Party! book. Piggie is invited to her very first party. Needing tips on how to prepare, Gerald, the self-proclaimed party expert, helps her prepare in formal attire for a fancy party... but wait? What if it is a swim party? They prepare for that too. What if it is a costume party? They prepare. Alas, our heroes arrive prepared for any possibility... or do they? The humorous surprise had the children roaring with laughter.

At the party, the pals meet the "Squirrelles" (played by Catera Combs, Kimberly Horner, and Roan Ricker) a seventies-inspired chorus of singing, dancing, jazzy squirrels who provide backup music and humor to many scenes.

Throughout the show, the two friends make great memories, learn to forgive, learn to share the spotlight, and demonstrate the power of true loyalty. The positive messages in the story are many.

We loved this upbeat, fun-filled show. Elephant and Piggie are the perfect ambassadors to bring the message of friendship, loyalty, and forgiveness to young audiences this summer.

The show is ideal for young children (preschool - early elementary) and lasts about an hour. This is a great outing to include on your summer fun plans at Crown Center!
