Jurassic World Dominion: Review

by

Jurassic Park the blockbuster Steven Spielberg film of my youth spawned two mega-hit franchises, and this summer fans can experience the end of an era as two generations unite for the first time. Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Jurassic Park stars Oscar®-winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill in Jurassic World Dominion, a brand new adventure bringing a conclusion to the epic franchise.

This week, my family and I attended a preview of the film. Packed with action and nostalgia, the film lives up to your expectations with dynamic special effects as our heroes try to save the world. The film picks up four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar. Now, dinosaurs are living alongside humans all over the world. Meanwhile, Biosyn, a genetics sanctuary, projects itself as a world leader in science and ecological advancements, while there is corruption and greed at play. Drs. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) team up to investigate what's behind genetically modified locusts at Biosyn. They encounter Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) on a quest to save their daughter, Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) a clone of Charlotte introduced in the Jurassic World films. Jeff Goldblum brings much-needed comic relief to the film as Dr. Ian Malcolm. And, the film introduces two new heroes: Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) and Ramsay Cole (Mamoudou Athie).  My favorite scenes were the interactions between Sam Neill and Laura Dern, and the comedy of Jeff Goldblum - they hit all the nostalgia fans were looking for with their excellent chemistry.

Our family's 5 Favorite Things About This Film:

  1. The reunion of the original cast and the new cast was truly fantastic! They wove the stories together well.
  2. There were MORE dinosaurs than EVER!
  3. There were NEW dinosaurs we've never seen before in a Jurassic film.
  4. The film truly feels like the originals with larger-than-life dinosaurs and special effects.
  5. The comedy from Jeff Goldblum lightened the mood in the midst of suspense so many times... we just wish there'd been more!

Our family has watched several of the Jurassic films together over the years and my girls said this was the best one yet. The action and adventure made it an exciting summer film. If you are a fan of the franchise, you won't want to miss the epic conclusion to the story.

The film is rated PG-13 for many scenes depicting violence and peril, and mild use of language. Note that there are many action sequences and many involve dinosaur attacks - our family found this to be a bit tedious at times (you expect these scenes in a Jurassic film, but there seemed to be a few too many for our taste). Still, this is a fun film that Jurassic fans are sure to enjoy.

"Jurassic World Dominion, from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, propels the more than $5 billion franchise into daring, uncharted territory, featuring never-seen dinosaurs, breakneck action and astonishing new visual effects."
