Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland 

AEG Presents will be offering ticketholders the opportunity to obtain refunds on shows that have been postponed due to the unprecedented impact of the coronavirus. Refund requests will be honored for any postponed show, once the rescheduled date has been announced. Ticketholders will then have 30 DAYS to request a refund on all rescheduled shows. For shows that have already announced a rescheduled date, you will receive an email from the ticketing company starting on May 1 with instructions on how to refund your tickets. You will have 30 DAYS from the time the email is sent to you to request your refund. Tickets purchased AFTER the rescheduled date has been announced will not be eligible for this refund. If your show hasn’t announced a new date yet, please hold on to your tickets. You will be receiving an email notification from the ticketing company when the show is rescheduled, along with information on how to request a refund should you choose not to attend the rescheduled event. Note that if you wish to attend the rescheduled show, your original tickets will remain valid for the new date.

Coterie

The Coterie has postponed Spring and Summer shows. It is our hope is to hold in-person classes this summer. When that is not possible due to a location closure, classes at that site will be offered virtually (live and interactive) OR at another site over the same dates, although start times may change.

Crown Center

The Crown Center Shops will reopen on Friday, May 15, 2020. This has been a challenging time for all and we look forward to welcoming you back.  We are thankful for the support that many of you offered during our closure.

As we reopen we continue to monitor state and local guidelines and will adjust our operations as needed.  Temporary reopening hours for the center will be Monday – Friday, 11am – 5pm, and Sunday, noon – 5pm from May 15 – 31, 2020.  During this early reopening period, our shops and restaurants may keep shorter or longer hours as suits their business, and some may choose not to be open at all.  Please check with an individual business by phone or by visiting their page on our website to learn more.  Crown Center Shops Directory.

Crown Center is home to many of your favorite entertainment destinations.  Most of these remain temporarily closed following local and state guidelines.  SEA LIFE Kansas City will be reopening May 15.  Summer events have been postponed or canceled – and some have gone virtual.  Be sure and check our events calendar for happenings at Crown Center.

Operating in a new way, you will find our shops and restaurants offering carry-out, delivery and curbside pick-up options.  This has been a most challenging time for our small and locally-owned businesses and we all look forward to serving you again.

Folly Theater 

With the health and safety of our patrons, volunteers, staff, and performers being our top concern, the Folly in partnership with our presenters, has canceled/postponed all events in accordance with the Mayor's State of Emergency and the Coronavirus Epidemic. Jaegers Paintball 

Starting May 8 our Proshop will be open 1 pm to 6 pm all week (excluding Mothers Day) for your paintball needs. May 15th we will be going back to normal hours for paintball games with limited players per each playing field (10 players max). We ask that you keep 6 feet away from others at all times on and off the playing field. We strongly recommend wearing cloth or medical masks while in the staging areas. Only 4 customers in the Proshop at 1 time. Please fill out waivers before entry into the facility to cut down on time in the lobby area. If you don't feel good stay home!

Kaleidoscope 

As of May 15, 2020 remains temporarily closed in response to the COVID-19 situation. The health and safety of our employees, guests and neighboring communities are our top priority. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will re-open when it is appropriate. In the meantime, please take good care of yourselves and each other and keep being creative.

UPDATE (5/22/20): Kansas City, MO Parks and Recreation Pools will not open for the season

“Due to ongoing health concerns, KC Parks has decided it will not open any of the 14 Pools or 14 spray grounds this season. After much deliberation and consultation with the City’s Health Department, KC Parks feels this is the best decision for our community. KC Parks has reopened dog parks, shelter reservations and tennis/pickleball courts with distancing guidelines, and our 221 parks, miles of trails, and golf courses remain open as well." ~Roosevelt Lyons, KC Parks Deputy Director of Operations

Kansas City Zoo 

Here we come ROARing back! After being closed for more than eight weeks, the Kansas City Zoo will reopen our doors to the public this Saturday, May 16, but with some changes. To ensure the health of our guests, employees, and animals, we are taking precautions that follow national and local guidelines for encouraging physical distancing and reducing high-touch areas. Here is what the public can expect: Limited number of guests

All guests must reserve an entry time at kansascityzoo.org. Entry times will be available in 15- minute increments, up to one week in advance. This includes Friends of the Zoo members and those holding free passes, although there will be no charge associated with making a reservation for these groups. Those without online access can call the Zoo at (816) 595-1234 to reserve a timed ticket.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

The City of Kansas City, Missouri, and Mayor Quinton Lucas issued an updated emergency proclamation to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. In response to this announcement, the Kauffman Center has announced event changes taking place in the venue through Friday, May 15, 2020. Kauffman Center Presents performances are postponed. Please see a list of events that may have been affected. If you have tickets to an event with the Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera of Kansas City or Kansas City Symphony, please refer to their websites regarding performance updates. The Kauffman Center is currently closed through May 15. For tickets to events after May 15, please call 816.994.7222 or visit kauffmancenter.org/tickets.

Kauffman Memorial Garden 

We are excited to announce that the Memorial Garden will be reopening on Monday, May 18. Temporary restrictions will be in place to support public health and comply with Mayor Lucas’s 10/10/10 Reopening Plan. Please review the following information prior to your visit: The new hours will be from 12pm-7pm (until further notice). There will be a limited capacity inside the Garden, which will be monitored from the main entrance. You may have to wait to enter the Garden depending on capacity. There will be directional signage to help support social distancing. The restrooms and Orangery will also be closed temporarily. Face masks are strongly encouraged. No food and beverages intended for picnics, gatherings, etc. Please check our Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.

Kemper Museum of Art 

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (Kansas City, Missouri) will be temporarily closed beginning Saturday, March 14, to support Kansas City’s effort to contain the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Please visit kemperart.org or click the link in our bio for more information.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center

LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Kansas City will officially reopen its doors to guests today, June 4th, welcoming fans back for a day of family fun with signature experiences like  MINILAND, LEGO® Racers: Build and Test, and Merlin’s Apprentice!  Taking extra precautions for health and safety, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City has implemented enhanced physical distancing measures, new limited capacity two-hour playtimes, LEGO® bricks just for families to use during playtimes, and stringent cleaning protocols before each playtime following the guidance of local and national health officials.

 “The health of our guests and employees is of the utmost importance. We are taking proactive steps to provide visitors with a safe, comfortable environment when we welcome them back to LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City again,” said General Manager of LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City, Ed Evans. “After weeks spent social distancing, we hope to provide our fans with a day of togetherness, learning, creating and carefree play.”

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

National Museum of Toys & Miniatures 

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures (T/m), home to the world’s largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the nation’s largest historic toy collections, is making preparations to re-open its doors to visitors in July.

T/m will resume daily operations with a soft re-opening for members from July 8-11 before welcoming the general public beginning Wednesday, July 15. The museum has been temporarily closed since March 14 in support of the nationwide effort to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

T/m will re-open as a member of KC Culture Cares, a group of Kansas City cultural institutions with a pledge to be proactive in fighting COVID-19 through a common standard of protocols for keeping visitors and employees safe. Enhanced health and safety measures will include: providing social distancing and safety signage, frequently sanitizing high-touch surfaces, verifying the health of staff each day, and requiring staff and volunteers to wear protective equipment.

Visitors are asked to stay home if they are ill or experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19. Visitors are also required to wear masks while visiting the museum.

“We are excited to welcome everyone back to the museum, and we are working diligently to ensure that the visitor experience is, first and foremost, a safe one,” said T/m Executive Director Petra Kralickova. “Joining forces with other cultural institutions in the KC Culture Cares coalition has been integral in these preparations, as well as following recommendations from local health officials and the CDC, to develop safety guidelines.”

T/m will be open from Wednesday through Saturday for two sessions from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and from 1-3 p.m. Tickets will be sold online only at www.toyandminiaturemusem.org. Guest capacity will be limited during operating hours, and the break between timed sessions will allow for mid-day sanitization.

National WWI Museum and Memorial  

The National WWI Museum and Memorial will reopen to its members on Monday, June 1 and to the general public on Tuesday, June 2.

“We have monitored the COVID-19 situation closely during the past few months and, in accordance with guidance from public health officials at the local, state and federal levels, we are ready to reopen America’s official WWI Museum and Memorial,” said Dr. Matthew Naylor, National WWI Museum and Memorial President and CEO. “We’ve spent considerable time developing a comprehensive reopening plan that allows for people to visit one of the world’s great museums and memorials in a safe and welcoming environment.”

Upon reopening, several elements of the Museum and Memorial will be adjusted to account for guidelines established by public health officials. Among those items:

“The experience of walking through the Museum, seeing the exhibitions and spending time looking though the materials and information we offer will remind visitors about the passion, strength and resilience humankind is capable of,” Naylor said. “The world was devastated by the Great War, compounded by the pandemic of 1918, yet re-emerged. We can look to the past to gain an understanding that we have the capacity to get through this and quite possibly emerge stronger than before.”

While the Museum will not be open to the public on Memorial Day, the organization offers three moving ceremonies streamed online for free to the public. At 10 a.m., a Memorial Day ceremony occurs to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice featuring remarks from dignitaries such as Missouri U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver II, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, Kansas U.S. Representative Sharice Davids, Sporting KC star Khiry Shelton, musical performances from Kansas City native and Nashville recording artist Casi Joy (NBC’s “The Voice”) and much more.

At Noon, a brief Memorial Day Bell Tolling Ceremony commemorates those who lost their lives with a bell that was rung on a daily basis in Kansas City by the Daughters of the American Revolution during World War I. At 2 p.m., the Museum and Memorial shares the Walk of Honor Dedication Ceremony, which recognizes individuals who have recently had a Walk of Honor brick dedicated in their name. When the Museum opens, it also marks the debut of two new special exhibitions:  100 Years of Collecting and 100 Years of Collecting – Art. The Museum and Memorial began collecting directly from the First World War in 1920 and has amassed the most comprehensive Great War collection in the world. In a tremendous stroke of foresight, the organization’s founders determined that the collection should be inclusive of every nation that actively participated in the war. 100 Years of Collecting provides a window to examine incredibly diverse objects and documents, as well as the opportunity to see how this monumental collection came to fruition. 100 Years of Collecting – Art examines striking works related to the First World War, including pieces from the U.S., Germany, France and the U.K. Both exhibitions are open through March 7, 2021 and are included with general admission.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The museum stands in solidarity with the city and the nation in response to the coronavirus, and is closed until further notice. We regret that all events, classes, workshops, and tours are canceled, at least through mid-June. This includes the museum’s Passport to India festival and the largest fundraiser for the museum, ShuttleCork. It also includes the Juneteenth festival. Sprint Center

In compliance with the State of Emergency declared by the City of Kansas City, Mo. prohibiting events with 1000 or more attendees amid coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns, upcoming events are canceled or postponed. Sprint Center is continuing to adhere to directives of local, state and federal officials in monitoring efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The health, safety, and security of Sprint Center guests, performers, athletes, clients, and associates remains our highest priority. Out of an abundance of concern, Sprint Center is working with promoters and tours to address the venue’s upcoming event schedule in an effort to prevent any potential spread of coronavirus. Starlight

While we are confident that the Starlight experience we love will endure and nights under the stars will return, we have unfortunate news to share regarding the remaining touring shows in our 2020 AdventHealth Broadway Series. Union Station 

Last week we welcomed members back to Science City. Starting tomorrow, Science City is open to everyone! We can't wait to welcome you back, and for you to experience our amazing new Early Learning spaces - part of Science City's biggest expansion since its 1999 opening.

With our Phase One reopening, Science City will be open Wednesday thru Sunday, while remaining closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

At this time, both members and non-members must reserve Science City tickets online in advance as we have to carefully manage admission counts. Science City tickets are available for either a morning session or afternoon session. This provides additional time for us to deep-clean and sanitize between sessions.

Jackson County, MO (other than KCMO):

Adventure Oasis  

City officials in Independence, Missouri, have decided Adventure Oasis Water Park will not open for its 2020 season. The city said the decision was made out of the abundance of caution for public health due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as due to budgetary considerations of what would likely be a limited pool season.

Blue Springs Parks & Rec

Jackson County, Missouri has released a modified Phase 1 of the Recovery Plan to allow gyms and fitness centers and places of worship to open with occupancy limits and social distancing guidelines. These changes were recommended by the mayors of Eastern Jackson County, including Mayor Carson Ross. This modification allows the fitness center portion of the Blue Springs Fieldhouse to reopen May 18. Blue Springs Parks staff will ensure the social distancing guidelines and occupancy limits set forth in the Jackson County plan are met. The city will be releasing more details on the opening of the Fieldhouse, membership information, and social distancing guidelines tomorrow, Friday, May 15. Extreme Grand Prix

COVID-19 Update from Extreme Grand Prix: Like you, we have spent the last two months learning about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and how it is impacting everything around us. Our top priority has always been the safety and the well-being of our guests and team members both on the track and while watching races. We have diligently prepared our facility for reopening. We have implemented the following steps to help stop the spread of COVID-19:

✦OUR BOUNCE HOUSE, KIDDIE AREA, ARCADE, ESCAPE ROOMS, PARTY ROOMS and BATTING CAGES WILL REMAIN TEMPORARILY CLOSED.✦

We are limiting the number of people in the building to of 10% of our total occupancy.

Signage all throughout the building reminding both employees and guests of social distancing requirements. This is includes signs on the floor spaced out 6 feet apart.

All tables and chairs have been spaced out.

We have closed half of the booths throughout the building to allow for social distancing.

Throughly cleaned and sanitized the entire building.

We are strongly encouraging cashless transactions. Debit and credit cards are welcome. We also accept Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay to make a contactless payment options. We are in the process of transitioning to a cashless operation.

To protect our guests and employees all staff contact stations have shields in place.

All persons entering the building are required to wear a face mask.

Water fountains have been temporarily closed.

Our staff constantly will be cleaning and sanitizing the building.

All helmets, neck braces and go karts are throughly cleaned and sanitized between each use. We do encourage you to bring your own full faced helmet but not required. We do have some available for purchase if desired.

There are several hand sanitizer stations all throughout the facility.

Each of the 7 sinks throughout the building have hand soap and paper towels.

We are limiting the number of people on the track at the same time to allow for social distancing.

To keep with social distancing requirements we will have everyone enter the building through the south entrance and exit through the north one.

Of the total 6 registration terminals, only 4 will be open to allow for social distancing.

Independence Center

Independence Community Ice Rink 

The health and safety of our skaters and their loved ones are always our top priority. We, like most in the country, are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation as it continues to develop. Jackson County Parks + Rec

Parks + Rec facilities will reopen Saturday, May 16, 2020, in accordance with recommended social gathering guidelines. For the safety of our associates and guests, please be advised that a MASK WILL BE REQUIRED when entering any indoor Jackson County Parks+ Rec facility, including Registration Office, Golf Course, Marinas and Historic Sites. Missouri Town 1855 and Fort Osage National Historic Landmark reopened and will be open Wednesday-Saturday for the time being. Things might look a little different during your visit. Our staff and volunteers will be in their usual period clothing, but for the time being, they will also be wearing masks for their safety and for yours. If you cannot comply, we hope to see you when the pandemic ends. Lee's Summit Parks & Rec 

Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation (LSPR) is taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Lee’s Summit. At this time all recreational programming, activities, leagues, events, childcare, and rentals are postponed until further notice effective Saturday, March 14, 2020. This includes all adult and youth activities, fitness classes and paid programming. LSPR facilities and community centers will remain open for the time being, however, as this is a fluid situation, conditions may change. LSPR will provide additional information as it becomes available. In addition to these measures, LSPR is proactively taking steps to minimize the spread of illness by increasing the frequency of cleaning of all facilities and high-touch areas, and consistently restocking and increasing availability of soap/hand-sanitizer in all restrooms and in multiple locations around facilities. LSPR is engaged in educational efforts for proper hygiene and health for staff and patrons. National Frontier Trails Museum 

Out of an abundance of caution for public health, we are announcing the postponement of our remaining 30th-anniversary celebration events this month. Paradise Park 

We are following the local authorities’ recommendation that non-essential businesses remain closed to the public for now while we work together to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Powell Gardens 

In anticipation of the end of stay-at-home orders in Johnson County, Missouri, we plan to begin our gradual reopening process with the following precautions in place to ensure the health and safety of our visitors and staff.

🌱 Beginning Wednesday, May 6 Powell Gardens will reopen for members only. Members will receive an email with instructions for purchasing tickets.

🌱 All visitors will be required to reserve advance tickets online. Tickets will be timed to regulate the number of visitors in the Gardens at any given time.

🌱 Hours will be limited to 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Wednesday–Sunday to ensure our custodial staff can maintain increased sanitization procedures.

🌱 All buildings will be closed, except for three public restrooms spaced throughout the Gardens. Tram service will be suspended.

🌱 Visitors will travel along one-way paths. Select areas will be open for picnics and leisure.

🌱 Guests will be encouraged to follow CDC recommendations and practice social distancing.

Blue Valley Rec 

As  of May 7, 2020 : Blue Valley Rec gets closer to the reopening of our facilities, the health and safety of our community is still our top priority. We are very excited to get back to providing clean, safe fun but we need to be smart in doing so.

We are working with local and state authorities as well as the Kansas Recreation and Park Association (KRPA) to ensure we comply with the guidelines being put into place to provide the best possible experience for all.

Our facilities, the Activity Center (AC), Rec Center (RC), and Sports Complex (SC), are not permitted to be open to the public during Phase One of Governor Kelly’s Plan to Reopen Kansas. JCPRD is planning to reopen our parks, facilities, and programs. What follows is a Four-Phase Plan that will guide the reopening for appropriate JCPRD buildings, services, and events during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) crisis.  Using the State of Kansas COVID-19 Recovery Plan as a foundation for decision making, this plan will reflect the recommendations of the Johnson County Health Department, State Health Department, and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. KC Ice 

We are hoping you are staying healthy and getting excited about the idea that skating on the ice again is in your near future! The old ice is completely melted and we are currently grading and leveling the sand floor. Next, our maintenance team will be flooding the surface with water and laying down fresh paint to provide a prestigious sheet of ice. Merriam Parks & Rec

We're planning to reopen City facilities to the public during Phase Three of Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly’s Ad Astra: A Plan to Reopen Kansas.

Phase Three begins no earlier than June 1, when all businesses and establishments can open to gatherings of up to 90 people.

While all City offices are scheduled to reopen during Phase Three, the Irene B. French Community Center will remain closed with preparation for the Merriam Community Center opening. We are now in Phase 1 in Johnson County, KS Government's reopening plan. Overland Park falls under the county's plan. Johnson County's graphic below gives guidance as phase one gets underway. Shawnee Town 1929

Below is the reopening plan for Shawnee Town 1929, as we approach Phase 2 of the Governor's reopening plan. Phase Two: May 18-May 31: Museum self guided tours will resume on Tuesday, May 19th at 10am. Our temporary Museum hours will be: Tuesday through Friday from 10am-4:30pm. With these guidelines, only 30 people are allowed in a gathering at a time, they must practice social distancing. Because we are a large site, this means more than 30 people are allowed on site total, but each GROUP must not exceed 30--and they must socially-distance. We will update again as we approach Phase 3 on June 1st. Thank you for your patience as we work through this unprecedented time. We look forward to welcoming you all back beginning next Tuesday!

At Urban Air, we are a family.  Since the beginning, we have always gone above and beyond to keep our guests and team members safe and healthy. And now, based on local state and governmental regulations as well as the feedback we received from our guests, we have put even more measures in place. None of our parks are open just yet, but when we do open, here’s what you can expect on your next park visit: Enhanced cleaning procedures. Temperatures taken of all Guests and Team Members prior to entry. Dedicated Sanitation Team Member on all shifts to wipe down frequently touched areas. Face coverings for all Team Members. A limited number of guests in the park, in two-hour increments. Limited capacity at all tables. Reserve and pay online ahead of time. Touchless foodservice and ordering options in most parks. Social distancing practices actively encouraged. But, keep in mind, this is just a start.  As we learn more, we will be fine-tuning so be sure to continue to check our website for details of our cleaning procedures and when your park will be reopening.

5/11/20 UPDATE:  We’re currently in the process of determining our re-opening date and are working with county officials as well as our tenants on a timeline that will enable everyone to provide a safe and comfortable shopping environment.  We hope to make that announcement very soon, so stay tuned! As a result of the WYANDOTTE COUNTY EXECUTIVE ORDER mandating all non-essential businesses to close in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, Legends Outlets is temporarily closing which will be effective Tuesday, March 24, 2020, for at least 30 days. Essential businesses that will remain open under modified hours include Target and Sprint. Restaurants will also remain open for curbside pickup, carryout and delivery services only. Sporting KC 

In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidance to postpone events involving more than 50 people over the next eight weeks, Major League Soccer has extended the postponement of its matches during this period of time. MLS remains focused on playing the entire 2020 season and is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing MLS Cup in December, as the league did prior to the 2019 season. The league is also identifying other available dates. Throughout this process, MLS will continue to prioritize the safety of our fans, players, employees and partners and to coordinate with federal and local public health authorities as well as other sporting organizations.

Missouri State Parks campgrounds will reopen to accommodate existing campground reservations at 3 p.m., Monday, May 18. Cedar Cove

As of 5/5/2020: Good news!! Cedar Cove will be conducting a soft opening this weekend! We will be operating on a limited basis for now, much like our weekday private tours, with small group sizes to continue best practices for the safety of our animals, our volunteers, and you our supporters! Saturday we will be giving tours starting every half hour, beginning at 11:00. Groups will be limited to (10). Cost is $20/ person, 3 and under are free and do not count towards the (10). The tours beginning at 2:30 and 3:00 will be able to stay and watch the feeding at 4:00, the cost for the 2:30 and 3:00 tour is $30 per person. Sunday is generally the same, but the feeding is at 2:00, so the 12:30 and 1:00 tours will be able to stay for the feeding. Retail store will not be open. Entrance and exit will be outside. We have 2 restrooms in the building so you will be allowed in the building to use them but not allowed in the building otherwise. Please send any questions via email, info@saveoursiberians.org. Libraries

Mid-Continent Public Libraries: 

Beginning May 11, 2020, all Mid-Continent Public Library branches with book drops, including the new East Lee’s Summit Branch (2240 SE Blue Parkway) will begin accepting returns of previously checked-out items.

All returned items must be placed in the outdoor book drops. Staff will not accept returned items directly from customers. 

Please note, book drops are not available at the Farview Neighborhood Library or the Colbern Road branch's construction site.

Curbside Service to Pick Up Holds Begins May 18

MCPL branches will begin curbside service Monday, May 18. Customers will be able to pick up requested materials they have been notified are available.

Branches will remain closed except to Library staff at this time. Daily curbside service will end one hour earlier than each branch's regular closing time.

Johnson County Libraries

Many essential Library services have been available online through the duration of our branch closures, including our eLibrary, access to Librarians through our Answers platform, and most recently, online programming and events.  In cooperation with Johnson County government, Johnson County Library is finalizing a phased plan to re-introduce access to our physical collection while taking appropriate measures to protect our staff and patrons, especially the vulnerable populations we serve.

We recognize and appreciate the demand in the community for our physical materials. The Library’s first phase is to reopen book returns and distribute holds via our existing drive-thru windows at Blue Valley, Lenexa City Center and Monticello branch locations. Full details about Phase 1, including key dates and drive-thru hours, information about returns, existing holds, placing new holds, and extension of due dates will be announced to patrons later this week via email, social media, and our website jocolibrary.org. Cass County Public Libraries

The question we have received the most is when will the library reopen? The short answer is we do not have a date yet. All library branches and bookdrops remain closed until further notice. When the Cass County Public Library does reopen, it will occur in phases. We will continue to monitor important updates related to COVID-19 and follow recommendations from our trusted health care professionals as we progress through the reopening phases.

The beginning phase will include allowing only staff members back into the buildings for reopening preparation such as moving/removing furniture, sanitizing workspaces, pulling patron holds, and providing all staff members with personal protective equipment and training. Cass County Public Library is waiting to receive protective gear and equipment for staff, such as face masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer.

The second phase includes reopening bookdrops as well as exploring contactless library services. All returned items will have to be quarantined, since the virus can remain alive on surfaces for 72 hours. The library will not enter this phase until personal protective equipment and other safety equipment are in place.

The third phase will involve branches reopening on a limited basis. We will follow regulations set by the state and county regarding social distance and building occupancy limits. In-person events and large gatherings will not be possible. The Genealogy branch and Bookmobile will not be open to the public.

The final phase will be reopening to pre-pandemic conditions, or as close as we can. That will include lifting the social distancing requirements and returning to all regular library operations with few to no restrictions.

Kansas City Public Libraries

There was no how-to handbook for this experience. Not for you. Not for the Library. But we’ve held fast to one guiding principle: The health and protection of our patrons and staff are our top priority, and remain so as we weigh a careful return to serving our community in a wider capacity.

That begins Tuesday, May 19, 2020, when the Library initiates a phased-in reopening of its physical locations. Operations and services will be limited at that early point, allowing patrons to pick up holds at five locations – the downtown   Central Library and Bluford, Plaza, Trails West, and Waldo branches – for four hours a day Tuesdays through Fridays. Pickups will be extended to the North-East, Southeast, Sugar Creek, Ruiz, and Westport branches in the coming weeks.

DETAILS: Introducing Pop In / Pick Up contact-free holds pickup service

We’ll build on that as quickly as possible, understanding the reliance of many of our patrons on the computers, broadband access, technology assistance, and other services that make the Library so essential. But anxious as we are – and know that you are, too – we will remain cautious and deliberate. We’ll be informed by city, county, and state health guidelines, including Kansas City’s 10/10/10 rule on customer capacity.

In the meantime, of course, you still can take advantage of the Library’s extensive menu of digital resources. And we are working with our community partners on other vital services, such as our collaboration with Connecting for Good and Kansas City Public Schools on distributing computers, Wi-Fi hotspots, headphones and Turn the Page KC activity packets to KCPS families lacking internet access.

This upcoming first step – making holds available for pickup at selected Library locations – might seem like a small one. But it is doors reopening. It’s books and other checkouts back in your hands.

Updated April 1, 2020: In response to COVID-19, all Kansas City, Kansas Public Library locations are now closed until further notice. All current checkout due dates will be extended.
