Did you know that on Nov. 1, 1950, assassins targeted President Harry S. Truman? The man from Independence survived unscathed and went on to keep his day’s appointments. The 33rd President of the United States—and Missouri native—was a fascinating man. Why not explore his life with a trip to the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum?

Before You Go

Before your visit, check the museum’s website. Click the “Kids Page” tab and you’ll find many resources. Children will enjoy the museum most if they have some prior knowledge about President Truman. There is even a link for children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. (However, please keep in mind that that this museum is typically most enjoyed by those who are 10 and older.) Many of the resources on the “Kids Page” are geared toward classroom teachers, yet most of the activities are adaptable for home use. Also, visit your public library to borrow and read some books about our 33rd President.

While You’re There

Grab a museum guide and settle in for a viewing of Setting the Stage: An Introductory Video. It provides a great overview of Truman’s life from childhood through the beginning of his presidency. After the show, it’s time to enjoy the museum. The main level displays Truman’s life as president while the lower level portrays his entire life. Be sure to take advantage of the many hands- on exhibits. Younger children will especially enjoy the Family Exhibit, with an opportunity to dress up like the Trumans.

After Your Visit

If you’re still up for more about Truman, consider visiting his home, also located in Independence. If you’d rather head to your home, talk as a family about your favorite museum exhibits. Did you notice that there wasn’t a computer in Truman’s Oval Office? Depending on what your family enjoyed, you’ll have new reasons to explore history. Aren’t you glad you likely have a computer in your office? While at your computer, be sure to read our tips to make the most of your local museum visits.
