KC Invention Convention 2021
This winter, we are excited to announce a brand new opportunity for local students to showcase their creativity, imaginations, and inventive prowess.
Imaginative students with a love for science, design, and imagination are invited to participate in the First Annual Kansas City Invention Convention! This local competition is a remarkable opportunity for young inventors to participate in real-world learning and creativity.
What is The Kansas City Invention Convention?
The Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology has partnered with The Henry Ford Museum to inspire the next generation of inventors in Greater Kansas City. Young inventors are encouraged to participate in this virtual competition for the chance to win prizes and an invitation to compete in the National Invention Convention via The Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. Most of all, this is a tremendous learning opportunity. Participants will be able to take advantage of the free K-12 Invention Convention Curriculum for area educators. (Please note that while the curriculum is available for students K-12, the competition is only open to those in 4-12th grades.)
The Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering, and Technology is an invaluable resource for the greater Kansas City area. Their slogan, "Where Science Lives," is a fitting descriptor for the research library offering thousands of resources for those studying technology, engineering, and science. Research librarians are on site ready to help students and adults alike as they delve into projects. Students may consider a visit to the library to research their ideas.
When is The Kansas City Invention Convention?
The first annual Kansas City Invention Convention will be held virtually in the spring of 2021 for students in grades 4 through 12, culminating in an awards ceremony on April 29, 2021.
Who may participate?
Students in grades 4 through 12, living in one of these 17 MoKan Counties are invited to be an Inventor: Missouri – Bates, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Johnson, Lafayette, Platte, Ray; Kansas – Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami, Wyandotte. The competition is open to all students whether attending public, private, or home schools.
Participants will work with a teacher, coach, or other mentors to prepare for the competition.
Young Inventors are challenged to explore the basics of the invention process, working to identify a problem to solve, and designing a brand-new invention as a solution. Students will keep an Inventor’s Log to document work and build a prototype of their invention. Each participant will also present their invention to judges and attend an award ceremony in April.
The KC Invention Convention provides free resources to help participants complete the Invention Logbook and to understand the invention process.
