Andre's Confiseur Suisse (5018 Main St. Kansas City, MO.  816.561.3440)

For over 65 years, Andre's has been a local landmark celebrating the Swiss art of chocolate making with exquisite sweet treats. The shop was founded by Master Konditor-Confiseur André Bollier and is now run by his grandson, Pastry Chef and Chocolatier René Bollier, who apprenticed under his grandfather and father, and trained in Switzerland. Current shopowners René and Nancy Bollier celebrate the art of chocolate making using Swiss techniques and classic recipes Kansas City customers have come to love. If you're looking for a Valentine Gift that is decadent, delicious, and beautiful, consider one of their many Valentine treats:

This year, think outside the chocolate box and consider a family gift that dads and kids LOVE! My husband had a blast (pun intended) enjoying a friendly game of family warfare with Gel Blasters. More gentle than paintball, and without the water of a water pistol, this is a fun game that can be enjoyed outside even in the winter months. We tried both regular gels and glow-in-the-dark blasters. These toys fire non-toxic, eco-friendly Gellets® (beads disintegrate on contact and leave no stain, no mess, and no cleanup). Each kit includes protective eyewear and a starter set of Gellets®. The Surge Gel Blaster comes with Semi- and Fully-Automatic blaster modes,  10,000 eco-friendly Gellets®, and up to 4 hours of play on a single charge via USB-C.  The Surge XL comes with a velocity dial that adjusts blaster power from 170 to an astonishing 250 feet per second. Gel Blasters are a great idea for family night fun the entire crew will love!

I love this fun Valentine's idea from The Spunky Stork, a company that hand prints sweet, spunky, and hilarious designs onto soft, organic cotton baby bodysuits and toddler/youth tees. My kids don't need more sugar and little ones aren't jazzed about flowers, so these fun shirts are a great gift idea! The Spunky Stork offers hundreds of designs for the most romantic day of the year including Bee MineLove Monster, and Hug Life. They even offer fun designs for parents (check out the Mom Boss shirt pictured above). The Spunky Stork’s fun and unique designs on clothing for babies, toddlers, and even their parents! Best of all their products are all made from organic cotton, contain no dyes or chemical colorants, and are made to order. Check out all the deals and designs at: https://spunkystork.com/ and Amazon

Our family recently tried Crumble Crate, a subscription box starting at $32.75. These DIY Baking kits include ingredients, recipes, and specialty baking tools. For budding chefs, this is a fun way to elevate your baking. The recipe included pictures and clear instructions, even explaining terms like "lemon zest" to children who may be new to some kitchen terms. The only ingredients we had to supply were perishable ingredients (eggs and milk). We sampled the Lemon Cupcakes with Strawberry Buttercream - perfect for a family Valentine's Celebration. The cupcakes were delicious and cute! I appreciated the ease of the project and the tasty result. Each kit makes 12-24 servings and you may choose from month-to-month, 3, 6, or 12-month subscriptions.

Snap a Pic with Hartley's Heart in Downtown Lee's Summit (pictured) near 3rd and Douglas. The iconic heart commemorates Dale Hartley, the owner of Hartley's Furniture Store (no longer in business) and one of Downtown Lee's Summit's founders. The heart has come to symbolize the district. Downtown Lee's Summit is the perfect place to spend an afternoon shopping, dining, and enjoying one of America's best Main Streets.

Commemorate your love with a love lock on the Old Red Bridge in Minor Park (KCParks.org/attraction/old-red-bridge-love-locks/). "The placing of love locks is a custom whereby couples affix a padlock to a bridge, fence, gate or similar fixture, so pronouncing their unbreakable and everlasting love. The Old Red Bridge is adjacent to the new bridge located on Red Bridge Road between Holmes and Blue River Road in south Kansas City."

Split a Skyscraper (a giant milkshake or ice cream soda meant for sharing) at Winstead's (WinsteadsSteakburger.com). The Plaza location delivers the treat with a jingle!

Treat your sweetheart to made-from-scratch personalized chocolates from Laura Little's Candies (LauraLittleCandy.com). They offer free personalization on fudge hearts for your valentine!

February in KC is cold. Puffer Hug (available on Amazon and pufferhug.com) is a cute and cozy puffer including my favorite feature of all... pockets! Give your kids a HUG this Valentine’s Day with this great winter-essential item. The cozy wrap is durable puffer on the outside (not easily snagged like a traditional scarf) with soft fleece on the inside. Four colors available – Red, Black, Grey/Yellow, & Blue. This is a gift that gives back! 15% of sales to children’s mental health programs nationwide. BONUS: Each Kid’s Puffer Hug purchased during the month of February will include an age-friendly step-by-step guide to write and mail a personal note as well as a cute pre-stamped postcard. (Don’t worry moms and dads – the postcard is non-Valentine themed so it can be mailed anytime!). For kids, this is a great life lesson and an opportunity to learn the joy of brightening the day of someone special – grandparents, cousins, teachers and friends! This kit includes: Puffer Hug Kids, Postcard, Postage stamp, and Step-by-step guide on how to write and mail a letter.

Show your KC love with a Charlie Hustle (CharlieHustleShop.com) shirt emblazoned with a huge heart and the letters “KC.” The style became extra popular during the 2014 World Series when Paul Rudd was photographed sporting the tee and enjoyed a resurgence with the 2015 Kansas City Royals World Series Championship. This is one shirt that will always be in style in our book.

Cookies from McLain's Bakery in Waldo (McLainsKC.com) have been enjoyed by generations of Kansas Citians since 1945! Buy a dozen to share with the family.
