Restaurant Review: Westport Flea Market

by

Summer is here and with it comes lazy days by the pool, a less structured routine and one of my most favorite things: meals cooked on the grill! To me, nothing says summer like burgers cooked outdoors on an open flame. Just the smell makes my mouth water. As much as I love a cookout at home, I also enjoy getting out for a great burger. If our family is going out and it’s burgers we want, we head to the Westport Flea Market (or “Best Burger” as it is referred to in our home).

While Westport may not be the first place that jumps to mind when you think of a night out with the kids, I’ve found that if you head down early you’ll be fine. I have to be honest, I’ve never had anything other than a burger (nor has anyone in my family) at the Flea Market. You won’t be disappointed. The meat used for the burgers comes from McGonigle’s Market where they specialize in beef. Burgers are ordered at the counter and drinks ordered from a waitress (you’ll pay separately, cash only).

After you get your burger, you’ll be able to fix it up how you like it with the condiments bar. My 7-year-old loves this as she feels very mature when I let her get her own burger from the counter and then fix it to her liking. Burgers come with your choice of fries, cottage cheese or coleslaw.

Monday nights are family nights at the Flea Market. You get one free kids meal with each adult meal purchased and a magician performs from 5:00 until 8:00. Tuesdays are buy one, get one free. You get two mini-market burgers for the price of one. The mini is the perfect size for me and for the kids as well. Noise is never a problem so you don’t have to worry about the kids disturbing anyone in the restaurant. For an extra treat, sit out on the patio. While my girls run around and collect rocks on the patio, my husband and I get a few minutes of peace to enjoy our meal.

For more fun, we often bring along our wagon so that after dinner we can walk down to Murray’s for an ice cream treat. I justify the extra indulgence with the fact that we walk (and pull the wagon). Next time the mood strikes for a burger, head to the Westport Flea Market for great food and a relaxed night out with the kids.
