Review: Grace Unplugged

“Do not delay, do not delay: the golden moments fly!”

So said Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and he was right.  I almost missed seeing an amazing movie because of delay--Grace Unplugged.

Grace Unplugged is playing at AMC 30 until October 31st.  Do not delay seeing this movie; it may change your life!  Read on for my review of this riveting film.

Grace Unplugged (rated PG) is the story about Grace Trey (AJ Michalka), an 18-year-old girl who edges away from her parents and her Christianity and decides to perfect her passion--singing.

Grace has a gifted voice, just like her father Johnny Trey (James Denton), who left stardom to become a worship leader.  He thinks that his painful past is behind him now that he’s a Christian.  But one day, his old agent Frank “Mossy” Mostin (Kevin Pollak) shows up, seeking someone to redo Johnny’s hit song from the past, “Misunderstood”.  To Johnny’s dismay, Grace decides to catch the quickest flight to California, ready to make it big with the help of Sapphire Records.

Although Grace becomes almost an overnight sensation, she begins to realize that being in the limelight isn’t all that’s cracked up to be.  Sapphire Records wants her to sing inappropriate songs and wear clothing that’s more “in”.

Grace refuses to compromise her values.

Still, life doesn’t seem right.  She misses her abandoned family--even her father.  Worst of all, Grace’s executives seem to only care about what her fame can bring them.

Which path is the right one for Grace to take: making it big with Sapphire Records, or returning to her father’s church?  Or is either of them right?  One Christian young man (Michael Welch) may help her decide.

You might think that this movie is mostly about rebellion, but there’s a lot more positivity in this show that can apply to everyone: fighting temptation; trusting that God is in control, even when nothing seems to be going right; understanding your family; making your faith your own; choosing Godly friends; and maintaining patience.

There is a bit of pressure on Grace to dig deeper into the worldly life, and there are a few brief scenes where teenagers consume alcohol, but other than that, this film is perfect for adults and children 13+.

The actors are outstanding, and the singing is phenomenal!  With the touch of humor that is mixed throughout this heartwarming movie, you are sure to love it.  It’s a tearjerker, but by no means a chick flick!  The plot is well laid-out, organized, and keeps your attention.

Chris Tomlin makes an appearance in this movie, and Christian music by TobyMac and Luminate is in this movie as well.
