Acting on a tip from a loyal KC Parent reader, my girls and I made a trip to the Shatto Dairy Farm in Osborn, Missouri. What a treasure we have right here in our own backyard! It only took a little over an hour to reach this family dairy that has been around for over 60 years and selling milk straight from their farm for the past four.

Our tour began in the bottling room where we watched the fresh milk placed into recyclable glass bottles. Shatto Dairy uses the glass bottles for several reasons. Not only do they keep the milk colder but are also environmentally friendly. As Leroy Shatto told us “Everything just seems to taste better when it comes from a glass bottle” and we agree!

The girls enjoyed our next stop at the milk tasting area. Unlimited samples of all the varieties of Shatto milk were available to try as well as fresh cheese and butter from the farm. Ally, my chocoholic, stuck with the classic chocolate milk polishing off five cups. Tori tried the chocolate, strawberry and root beer and determined that they were all her favorite! In addition they have banana and orange crème flavors as well as your standard white milk for the purists.

After filling up on milk we went to see the stars of the farm-the cows! We watched as they were milked by machine. I learned that the milk we saw would be in stores the very next day. How great to know that I can serve my family a product that is so fresh! We then got to visit the calves. Both girls had a great time brushing and bottle feeding them.

Tori was thrilled that she actually got to milk a cow “and milk really came out!” I was impressed that we weren’t rushed through our visit and were invited to spend as much time with the cows and calves as we wanted. It was nice to leave when the girls were ready rather than when our time was up. They have a nice area for picnics if you want to inlude that in your day at the farm.

Our trip to Shatto Dairy Farm was not only fun but also a great educational experience. I learned quite a bit and have been impressed by the things that Tori remembered. Everyone we met at the farm was enthusiastic about producing a great tasting product and sharing what they do with the public.

Tours are $4.00 per person, children two and under are free. Visit their informative website to learn more about their special events and tour options for groups.

Margaret and her husband live in Lenexa with their daughters and are drinking more yummy milk than ever before!
