Traveling Through the KC Arts District

by

Kansas City has hundreds of attractions to simply marvel at, and while they all give Kansas City a unique sense of wonder, nothing—and I do mean nothing—could ever replace Kansas City’s art district. Keep reading to find out just how great this district truly is. Just north of celebrated Kauffman Stadium, home of the Royals, and south of downtown Kansas City, the Crossroads District sits in the thick of it all. If you still aren’t sure exactly where that is, start your journey at 18th & Main streets, and head east.

HELPFUL TIPS

  1. Wear comfortable shoes! Whether you’re out for a late-night stroll or taking in the beautiful skyline, wear a pair of shoes that won’t have you wishing you stayed at home. Exploring the Crossroads is magical but requires a good hike.
  2. Prepare for the weather.   When it comes to weather, every First Friday is a little bit different. Winters and falls warrant long sleeves and sweatshirts, while springs and summers call for sunblock and umbrellas. No matter the season, check the forecast and prepare yourself and your team accordingly.
  3. Bring Change! Although many love the convenience of Apple Pay and Cash App transfers, keeping some cash handy works well in this district—especially with huge affairs like First Fridays going on. My suggestion is 40 bucks and one credit card, just in case. Most of the Crossroads vendors accept cards, but I always like to keep a little cash just in case I have to pay to park or a food truck doesn’t have a working card reader. 4. Not quite ready to call it a night? Well, Chances has you covered! This Day of the Dead-themed coffee shop gives you unlimited coffee, latte, tea, espresso, and sassy lemonade options. They even have four different milk options for creamers! Let’s face it, even Starbucks isn’t that savage. This hidden gem definitely gives a new look to a nightcap. FIRST FRIDAYS!

One of the district’s best attractions happens on the first Friday of each month. What is it exactly? The best way to explain the Crossroads First Fridays is as a celebration of art, food, culture, and creativity. On the first Friday of each month, hundreds of vendors, food trucks, art studios, bars, and restaurants open their doors to the public, inviting them to simply enjoy life. Each month the district features both local and national talents. The party starts at 5:00, so get a  good parking spot and make sure you save room for dinner.

Another great eatery along 18th Street within this well-dressed district is Mission Taco! This place puts a funky twist on the classic street taco. CATCH AN ART SHOW

Food and music draw the crowd in, but the art is what really keeps people coming back. Each month different venues host showcases of some of the most talented printmakers, sculptors, and painters. In most of these showcases, artists from all around collectively discuss their works, as well as sell them. Galleries sit side by side in this district and share the love they have for some of their very own friends, family members and colleagues. The galleries all treasure art and artists but also showcase their pieces in unique ways. Some fan favorites include:
