Alike But Different

It always delights me when someone makes a comment about how my three children look so much alike.  I know it’s silly, but somehow I think it will make their bonds tighter.  Like I said, it’s probably silly!

However, though they all look very similar, they are all very unique and remind me of it nearly every day.

It wasn’t long ago that I took them to get ice cream and they quickly gave me their orders.  One wanted chocolate, another wanted vanilla and the other wanted, you guessed it…swirl!

The same thing happens with their toast in the morning.  My oldest prefers toast with just butter.  My youngest daughter likes peanut butter and my sweet middle child and only boy likes peanut butter and jelly.

Therefore, it came as no surprise the other night when I told my children they could each choose one book to read before bed that they each chose something suited to their interests.  I grabbed our Bible Storybook and left them to make their selections.  I couldn’t help but smile when they came to me with their books.

My oldest daughter handed me a book full of stories of Raggedy Ann and Andy.  She is a lover of all things dolls and stuffed animals so her choice fit her perfectly.

My son then came in with a pile of books.  He isn’t one to shy away from asking for more than what has been offered.  His pile was full of Magic School Bus books.  He loves to learn how things work so these books are just right for him.  (We only read one!)

I didn’t even have to look when my youngest daughter brought me her book.  I just knew it had to be Cinderella.  It was either that or Snow White and we had read that one earlier in the day.  Right now, her days are full of princesses.  She fills her doll house with small princess figurines and loves for me to read princess stories.

Yes, my children may look alike, but that is where most of their similarities end.  No, on second thought, they are all very similar in that they know what they like and aren’t afraid to be just who God made them to be.  I’d say that’s a similarity worth celebrating.

How are you children alike?  How are they different?  They sure keep life interesting, don’t they?
