Disney's Beauty and the Beast
Disney's Beauty and the Beast Nov. 2-3, Yardley Hall. Tickets $13 - $15; $18 day of show. Step into the enchanted world of Broadway's modern classic, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 13 countries. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature, the stage version presented by the Culture House includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Celebrate Armistice at the National World War I Museum & Memorial
This year, the National WWI Museum and Memorial is commemorating the centennial of the armistice of World War I (Nov. 11, 1918). They will be hosting special events throughout the weekend to mark the occasion.
Special programs include:
- 5,000 Poppies Illuminate the Memorial: Nov. 2-11, The official WWI memorial of the United States will be illuminated with a nearly 55 million pixel display featuring more than 5,000 poppies each evening with a massive and moving light installation. Peace and Remembrance occurs for nine days leading up to Nov. 11 in recognition of the nine million soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war. The display can be viewed on the North Lawn outside the National WWI Museum and Memorial Times: Nov. 2-3 | 7 p.m. , Nov. 4-11 | 6 p.m.
- On Nov. 9 through 11, veterans and active duty military members are invited to enjoy the museum for free. General admission for the public will be half price.
- Armistice Ceremony Nov. 11, 9:30-10:30. Multinational commemoration of the Armistice of 1918.
- Bells of Peace Nov. 11, 10:45. Wreath-laying ceremony culminating in tolling of bells to honor those who served in the Great War.
- Reflections of Hope: Armistice 1918 Through Nov. 11. Installation by artist Ada Koch in the Reflection Pool at the National WWI Museum and Memorial to remember American service men and women who lost their lives in World War I. Each of the 117 poppies represents 1,000 U.S. lives lost, but not forgotten.
- The World Remembers Through Nov. 11. Displays the names of those who perished in the war. Provided by participating nations, the exhibition is part of a four-year project that remembers those whose lives were lost. It also marks the first comprehensive attempt to compile the names of all U.S. soldiers killed during World War I (spearheaded by the National WWI Museum and Memorial).
Rock It!

Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival
Nov. 4, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. This lively festival celebrating Mexican art and culture, including an altar installation which tributes loved ones who have passed away, has become a fall tradition for many families. Enjoy art activities, live music and entertainment, and Mexican food.

Worlds of Fun Winterfest
Worlds of Fun is hosting WinterFEST Weekends Nov. 23 - Dec. 30. Holiday cheer rings out at Worlds of Fun during the annual WinterFest celebration. Thousands of sparkling lights transform the park with an inviting glow that warms the hearts and lifts the spirit. Witness festive live shows, meet iconic holiday characters, join holiday activities like ice skating and cookie decorating, ride select park attractions and create lasting memories with family and friends. This holiday celebration takes place on select nights in November and December
Kansas City Zoo Fall Fun
This year the zoo celebrates the opening of the brand new Stingray Bay, and Bam Bam, a new polar bear to join Berlin at the Kansas City Zoo. At stingray bay, visitors may touch cownose and southern stingrays and white-spotted bamboo sharks in this shallow touch pool. This indoor/outdoor facility is ideal for year-round guests, but most importantly, the state-of-the-art exhibit features a water filtration system providing a healthy habitat for the animals. Entrance to Stingray Bay is included with regular zoo admission. For an additional fee, you may participate in one of a limited number of feeding opportunities. CYT presents Newsies: The Broadway Musical and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
CYT Kansas City presents two fabulous family friendly shows this November:
- Newsies Nov. 1-4 at Bell Center at MNU, 2030 E. College Way, Olathe, KS. Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!
- The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Nov. 8-11 at Peters Theatre, Brown Hall, William Jewell College, 252 William Jewell College Drive, Liberty, MO. Tickets $13/ea. The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world, so when they demand parts in the Christmas pageant, the whole town panics. There’s not supposed to be biting or cigar-smoking in Bethlehem, and while these kids have never even heard the Christmas story, they definitely have rewrites! Soon everyone is calling to cancel the whole thing. Come see the Christmas story through new eyes in this buoyant musical adaptation of the funny and touching holiday classic.
ELF The Musical
Elf: The Musical at Lied Center Nov. 7 at Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Dr, Lawrence, KS. ELF The Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern-day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner ELF. Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit, ELF features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award-winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

Upcoming Events in November:
- Arrival of the Mayor’s Christmas Tree: November 1-2 For the 45th year, the Mayor’s Christmas tree will complete the 2,000-mile journey from Oregon to Kansas City to stand as a symbol of the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, which benefits the city’s less fortunate residents. Standing 100 feet tall, the tree will be hauled in at 9 a.m. and put in its stand at 10 a.m. on November 2 to be prepared for its November 23rd lighting.
- Ice Terrace Opening Day: November 2 Kansas City’s favorite winter activity and holiday tradition, the Crown Center Ice Terrace, will kick off its 46th season on November 2 with free skating for all. From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Opening Day, locals and visitors can skate into winter with complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, and a spin on the rink’s fresh ice.
- 2018-2019 Crown Center Ice Terrace: November 2 - March 10 Through the rest of the season, regular admission is $7 and adults over 60 and children 4 and under are free. Ice skates can be rented for $3. Enjoy perks like "Two-for-Tuesdays" after 5 p.m. each Tuesday, group rates on weekdays for groups of 20 or more, skating lessons beginning December 1, and season passes for just $80/person.
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical: November 6 - December 30 Back by popular demand, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer graces The Coterie Theater’s stage throughout the season with the show’s classic characters and heartwarming message. Tickets are $13 for children and seniors, and $17 for adults, and can be booked online or by calling 816-474-6552.
- EBT Santa’s Countdown to Christmas: November 23-December 31 Christmas nostalgia comes to life with EBT Laughing Santa, who first appeared at KC’s Emery, Bird, Thayer department store in the early 1900s and has been a holiday fixture at Crown Center since 1979. Marvel at St. Nick in the Crown Center Shops as he chuckles his way through the holiday season while counting down the days until Christmas.
- Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony: November 23 The Mayor’s Christmas Tree will illuminate the day after Thanksgiving to the light the Christmas spirit in Kansas City. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include Mayor Sly James and a celebrity guest flipping a light switch on the 6,000 lights that adorn the tree.
- Santa’s Arrival at Crown Center: November 23 Santa Claus will arrive at Crown Center in a horse-drawn carriage to make his way to his seasonal residence at Santa’s Gingerbread Station, where he’ll be available for meet-and-greets until December 24.
- Santa’s Gingerbread Station: November 23 - December 31 Families have found their home for holiday fun at Santa’s Gingerbread Station, where kids can explore the interactive exhibit, climb aboard the Crown Center Express Train Engine and enjoy Gingerbread Village. This is also their chance to meet and take photos with Santa (professional photos available for a fee) until December 24 when Santa heads back up north.
- Holiday Choirs: November 26-December 21 Beautiful holiday music fills the halls of Crown Center, as more than 130 area school, church and community choirs perform every day.
- Mayor’s Christmas Tree Ornament Signing: November 28 Come by the Crown Center Atrium from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. to have the 2018 Mayor’s Christmas Tree ornament signed by this year’s designer, Hallmark Keepsake artist Matt Johnson. The ornament, which was made by recycled wood from last year’s tree, can be purchased for $13.95 and is a perfect keepsake item or gift.

A Christmas Carol
KCRep presents A Christmas Carol Nov. 16 - Dec. 30 at Spencer Theatre, 4949 Cherry, Kansas City, MO. Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly, cold-hearted creditor, continues his stingy ways on Christmas Eve. He rejects a dinner invitation and all the good tidings of the season from his nephew, Fred; he yells at charity workers; and he overworks his earnest employee, Bob Cratchit. Until, he is visited one-by-one, by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, who show him the errors of his ways until he ultimately discovers what’s really worth celebrating at Christmas-time and beyond.

Luminary Walk at Overland Park Arboretum
Luminary Walk: Overland Park Arboretum The Luminary Walk will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., three weekends, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, Nov. 30-Dec.1, and Dec. 7-8. This Arboretum fundraiser features a mile of candles, holiday lights, live musical entertainment, Santa Claus in the Depot, horse-dawn wagon rides, hot cider around a campfire and mystical Gnome and Fairy Villages. Volunteers and staff members are transforming the Arboretum into a wonderland of candles and lights, music and holiday fun. Thousands of candles line the walkways and trails. KC Ballet presents The Nutcracker

This FREE drive-in Christmas light display will be synchronized with live musicians in the PV parking lot. It’s a family-friendly show that will capture the hearts of many. Audiences will tune their radios to hear live performances of Christmas favorites from the comfort of their own cars. Through a simple narrative the Gospel story will be weaved throughout the show - inviting guests to discover the true reason for the season. Guests can view the 15-minute show from the warmth of their vehicles on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Pigeon Comes to Topeka! A Mo Willems Exhibit thru Jan. 4 at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center. Co-organized by Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the exhibition is inspired by the art and characters of the beloved children’s book author and illustrator, Mo Willems. Many familiar characters will be featured including best friend duo Elephant and Piggie, faithful companion Knuffle Bunny and The Pigeon, the wily city bird best known for his antics in Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Activities will give visitors the opportunity to make art that is inspired by Mo Willems and to learn about the rich social and emotional lives of the author’s characters. The exhibit will also feature prints of illustrations, including sketches and other preliminary materials, by Mo Willems. In this play-and-learn exhibit, visitors can: Have a hilarious conversation in the voices of Elephant Gerald and Piggie at a double-sided phone booth. Make Elephant and Piggie dance with old-time animation. Put on a wearable bus and take a drive around the exhibit. Spin the laundromat washing machine and uncover Knuffle Bunny and other surprises! Dress up Naked Mole Rat and send him down the runway for a one-of-a-kind fashion show. Stack lightweight blocks to create their own terrible monster or funny friend. Launch foam hot dogs at The Pigeon and play the plinko game to give the Duckling a cookie. Try out art techniques that Mo uses for his own books.

Dinosaurs Revealed: Journey Across America, a world premiere exhibition at Union Station! Come face-to-face with 26 life-size dinosaurs. See them move, hear them roar. Examine two massive full body skeletons and dozens of real fossils. Get hands-on digging for new evidence. Walk through the most prolific North American dinosaur dig sites. Visit the Paleontologist Hangout and meet real dinosaur hunters. Interact with a 3D augmented reality volcano, dinosaur tracks, puzzles and more. It’s an adventure that promises to educate, fascinate and excite imaginations of every age.
