Library Lovers Month: We love all of our local libraries, but our favorite is the Central Library of the Kansas City Public Library (14 W. 10th St., Kansas City, MO), housed in the former First National Bank of Kansas City. This library is an architectural masterpiece with reading rooms, research areas, a cafe and a rooftop view of the city skyline, complete with a giant life-size chess set! But the best section of the library for families is the Children's Department. Enter through the pages of a book to a place where kids will discover a wonderful reading area organized by ages and interests and offering many hands-on activities, as well.

Black History Month: Celebrate Kansas City’s rich African American heritage in the 18th & Vine District at the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The American Jazz Museum celebrates the history of the African American experience on 18th & Vine and its contributions to Kansas City, and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum features interactive exhibits for all ages.

American Heart Month: Contact the Community Blood Center to find a nearby location or event where you can donate blood to help save lives.

Feb. 1: Super Bowl Sunday. Wow your friends and family with a football-shaped pizza from Minsky’s.

Feb. 2: Groundhog Day. Visit our KC Calendar of events to find attractions celebrating Groundhog Day.

Feb. 4: Facebook’s birthday. Follow Kansas City Parent Magazine on Facebook, where you’ll learn about the best in family fun in Kansas City every day!

Feb. 7: Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Birthday. Celebrate at Ernie Miller Nature Center with Laura, who tells of her pioneer adventures as participants make crafts, play games and celebrate Laura’s birthday. Registration required at JCPRD.com

Feb. 14: Valentine’s Day. Visit our Kansas City Calendar for great Valentine’s Day ideas. Treat the kids to a heart-shaped pizza from Papa Murphy's.

Feb. 17: Mardi Gras. Celebrate with authentic New Orleans-style beignets, courtesy of Beignet in the City Market (816.472.0777).

Feb. 24: National Cupcake Day. Indulge in a decadent dessert at your local Smallcakes (locations at SmallcakesCupcakery.com).
