Just a short one-hour drive from most places in the metro is Topeka, the capital of Kansas — and it makes for a fun day trip.
I recommend starting your date day at the Kansas State Capitol building, which surprised us by how enjoyable it was. There, you can take a guided tour up into the copper dome and see some fascinating architecture. It’s 296 steps up and 296 steps down. Once you are at the top, you can walk around the outside balcony for 360-degree views of the city. There’s plenty to see in the rest of the building as well. The old cage elevator (with a live operator) was installed in 1923 and is especially cool. Be sure to plan about 90 minutes for your visit if you are taking the dome tour.

From there, head to lunch at Bobo’s Drive-In. This diner/drive-in combo is an absolute must. They have been serving up delicious food since 1948 and were even featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2008. The smash burgers, fries and kettle chips are all amazing. And their house-made apple pie is to die for — loads of apples and cinnamon encased in a perfectly flaky crust. To be honest, it is one of the best pieces of pie I have ever had.

Downtown Topeka is up next, for chocolates at Hazel Hill Chocolate. They have everything from candy-, caramel- or chocolate-covered apples to English toffee, craft chocolate bars and peanut butter cups. We opted for some truffles and nut clusters, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Hazel Hill is a great place to pick up gifts for birthdays and other special occasions. Just down the street is the Greetings from Topeka mural, which is a fun photo op.

On your way out of town, you absolutely have to check out a most unusual place called Truckhenge. It’s a 63-acre farm (of sorts) owned by Ron and Linda Lessman. It showcases a wide range of art or junk (however you choose to perceive it). There’s also a 30-acre fishing pond and gun range. The farm has been in the family since 1879 and attracts visitors from all over world. It is truly one of the weirdest, most bizarre and most fascinating places we have ever been and is certainly worth a stop. Note: Admission is free, but they do accept donations.
