Looking for a Kansas City day trip that blends history, charm, great food and kid-friendly fun? Independence, Missouri, deserves a spot on your family’s local adventure list. Just a short drive from many parts of the metro, this historic city offers presidential landmarks, an accessible playground and splash pad, locally owned restaurants, community events and a nature center that gives kids room to explore.
Here’s how to spend a full family day in Independence, Missouri.
First Stop: Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum

Start your Independence outing with a history-rich visit to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum. Before you even head inside, stop for a photo with the Patriotic Parade of Hearts sculpture out front. It makes the perfect “we made it” photo opp and sets the tone for a day full of local pride.
We visited on one of those abnormally warm “I can’t believe it’s only May” days, and the museum’s calm ambience and powerful air conditioning were more than welcome. But what impressed me most was how kid-friendly the experience felt. Children were not just tolerated here; they were celebrated and encouraged to engage.
Be sure to ask at the front desk for the free Family Fun Booklet, which helps young museum-goers stay involved as they move through the exhibits. It is a simple touch, but it made the museum feel much more approachable for families.

Sports fans will also want to check out the United We Play: Kicking It with the Trumans exhibit, which celebrates the role sports play in bringing people together. With artifacts, photos, videos and stories featuring the Trumans and Kansas City sports teams, it is an especially fun stop as Kansas City prepares to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Second Stop: McCoy Park Splash Pad and Accessible Playground in Independence, MO
After taking in some presidential history, let the kids burn off energy at McCoy Park. The park’s western-themed accessible playground and splash pad make it a great next stop, especially on a warm day.

The playground is imaginative and inviting, with a Wild West feel that encourages pretend play. Families will also appreciate the inclusive design, splash pad, shade structures, picnic tables and walking trail. It is the kind of stop that gives kids a chance to move, climb, splash and reset before lunch.
Depending on the day you visit, you may also want to check the city’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism calendar for Popsicles in the Park. This free family event series brings simple summer fun to local parks with popsicles, entertainment and activities for kids. It is an easy add-on if your Independence adventure lines up with one of the scheduled events.

Third Stop: Lunch on the Independence Square
If you have not been to the Independence Square recently, you are missing out. The area is charming, full of presidential pride and beautifully revitalized. Today, the Square is home to more than 100 small, locally owned businesses, including restaurants, shops and local gathering spots.
If your visit falls on a market day, make time for the Independence Farmers’ Market at the Uptown Market. Located near the historic Square, the market offers locally grown meat and produce, homemade sweets and treats, and handmade crafts. Everything is grown or made within a 100-mile radius of Independence, and the growers-only market does not allow produce or products that are shipped in or purchased at auction. The summer market runs Saturdays from May through October, with Wednesday evening markets offered June through August. For more of the best Farmers Markets in the KC metro check out our guide here!

There are plenty of options for lunch on the Square, but we chose Café Verona, which felt like a little slice of Italy right here in Missouri. We sat on the open-air patio, and I was especially impressed by the robust kids menu. The buttered noodles were a hit with my little dude, while my pick was the creamy pesto gnocchi, which I am still daydreaming about.

After lunch, take a few minutes to wander the Square, peek into a shop or simply enjoy the historic courthouse views. It is a great reminder that Independence is not just a place to drive through, but a destination worth exploring.
Fourth Stop: George Owens Nature Park
End the day with fresh air and hands-on discovery at George Owens Nature Park. Inside the DeWitt Nature Center, kids can see local plants and wildlife, including snakes, turtles and a few fun taxidermy critters as well as partake in hands-on fun and learning.

The current exhibit, Independence Through the Rock Record, uses fossils, photographs and art to guide visitors through the area’s natural history. It is a great way to add a little science and nature to your day after exploring history, play and local dining.
The possibilities for adventure here are endless, whether your family wants to explore indoors, take a nature walk or simply slow down before heading home.
A Memorable Day in Independence: A Little History, A Lot of Fun
Did we do all of this in one day? Yes.
Was it a lot? Also yes.
Did my kiddo pass out before we even pulled out of the parking lot? Absolutely.
But that is the sign of a successful family day trip! Independence offers just the right mix of history, playtime, local food, community events and outdoor exploration, making it a fun and surprisingly full day close to home.
For Kansas City families looking for something a little different, this lesser-known part of the metro is well worth a visit!
