This Six-Stop Tour holds a special place in my heart. As someone who grew up in Shawnee and still calls it home, I’ve had the privilege of watching this community evolve over the past 20 years. The same streets where I once logged countless summer miles training for high school cross country have transformed in remarkable ways. Hardware stores have given way to charming breweries, while a mix of trendy KC favorites and beloved local classics have brought new life to Johnson Drive and its surrounding areas.
This list of favorite places is carefully curated from my own lived experiences and the special memories I’ve made in this charming community.
1. McLains
Need I say more? If you haven’t been to one of the six McLain's bakeries in the KC area, it’s time to put down the phone, close the laptop, grab the kids, and hit the road. The Shawnee McLain's is my new personal favorite. The team has masterfully transformed an old auto mechanic's garage into a stunning space filled with natural light, cozy nooks, and plenty of seating options. And let’s talk about the baked goods—they’re absolutely divine. In fact, Shawnee McLain's has become a must-visit for my in-laws whenever they’re in town. It’s a non-negotiable stop, and I can’t say I blame them!
KC Parent Pro Tip: Baked goods on the mind? Make sure you head to McLain’s earlier rather than later, especially on the weekends, as these tasty treats can get picked over fast!
2. Flying Cow Gelato
Let me start by confessing—I have a massive sweet tooth, and Flying Cow Gelato is an absolute dream for fellow dessert lovers. This local gem serves up handcrafted gelato that’s as creamy and flavorful as it gets, with rotating seasonal flavors that always keep things interesting.
KC Parent Pro Tip: On a nice day, make a day of it! Flying Cow Gelato is just a short stroll from West Flanders Park. Whether you’re hitting the pickleball courts, enjoying the playground with the kids, or simply soaking up some sunshine, a stop at Flying Cow Gelato is the perfect way to wrap up your park adventure. Trust me, it’s worth every step—and every bite!

3. Old Shawnee Pizza
If you’re looking for a slice of local history served with mouthwatering flavor, Old Shawnee Pizza is where it’s at. A Shawnee staple since 1969, this family-owned pizzeria has perfected the art of handcrafted pizza, combining fresh ingredients and time-tested recipes for a taste that keeps customers coming back decade after decade.
From their signature specialty pies (hello, Chicken Alfredo Pizza!) to their build-your-own options, there’s something for everyone at Old Shawnee Pizza. But don’t stop at pizza—locals rave about their toasted ravioli, wings, and hearty sandwiches, too.

4. Annedore’s Fine Chocolates
The new kid on the downtown Shawnee block, Annedore’s Fine Chocolates, has officially arrived—and it’s already winning hearts (and taste buds). While new to Shawnee, Annedore’s has been a beloved fixture in KC for over 30 years, originally delighting visitors in Westwood Hills with their handcrafted confections. From decadent European-style truffles to house-made caramels, buttery toffees, and crisp brittles, Annedore’s offers a little slice of chocolate heaven in every bite. Whether you’re picking up a thoughtful gift, treating yourself, or both (no judgment here!), this is a stop you won’t regret.
5. Wild Child
Nestled in the heart of Shawnee, Wild Child Bar is the perfect destination for your next date night or girls' night out. This quirky establishment offers a vibrant atmosphere complemented by a diverse menu of inventive cocktails and thoughtfully crafted mocktails, ensuring that every guest finds something to delight their palate. With warm wood paneling and an abundance of greenery, Wild Child provides a cozy and inviting setting that encourages relaxation and enjoyment.
KC Parent Pro Tip: Given its intimate size and popularity, especially on weekends, it's wise to plan ahead. Visit their website to make a reservation, ensuring you and your party can enjoy this charming venue without delay.
6. Shawnee Town 1929 Museum
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of Shawnee, Kansas, at the Shawnee Town 1929 Museum. This living history museum recreates a typical day in and around the farm community of Shawnee during the 1920s, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the past through engaging exhibits, programs, events, and historical collections.
Explore a variety of meticulously reconstructed buildings, including a farmhouse, barn, smokehouse, and more, each providing insight into the daily lives of Shawnee's residents nearly a century ago. The museum's dedication to preserving and presenting local history makes it a must-visit for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the heritage of the Midwest.
