Say “Hasta Luego” to the Monarchs

Each fall, monarch butterflies begin an extraordinary journey south to their overwintering grounds in Mexico. Before they go, join K-State Johnson County Extension Master Naturalists and Monarch Watch at the 12th annual Hasta Luego Monarchs celebration and learn more about these remarkable travelers—and what we can do to help them along the way.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 26, Pollinator Prairie in Olathe will come alive with activities, exhibits and opportunities to explore the native landscape. See monarch tagging demonstrations, discover native plants that support pollinators, learn about milkweed and habitat, and explore topics ranging from rain barrels and composting to bird nesting boxes. New this year, DarkSky Missouri will share how nighttime light pollution affects wildlife and highlight the fascinating world of bats.

Families can enjoy games and hands-on activities while visitors of all ages discover the remarkable life cycle and migration of the monarch. Wander the ADA-compliant walkway through Pollinator Prairie’s native gardens, check out new plant labels for ideas you can use in your own garden or containers, and discover why this former Superfund site has become a thriving community resource for pollinators and people.

Hasta Luego Monarchs is free and open to the public. Come learn, explore and celebrate the monarchs before they begin their journey south—and leave with ideas for creating a landscape that welcomes them back.
