Mutts for Mental Health

If you’re looking for a meaningful summer activity for your teen, this one checks a lot of boxes!
Zero Reasons Why is a Kansas-based campaign dedicated to teen mental health — built around the idea that connection, community, and honest conversations are some of the most powerful tools we have. We work in partnership with Johnson County Mental Health, and our Johnson County Teen Council plans and leads real events, giving teens a hands-on role in the work.
On July 17th, the Teen Council is partnering with Wayside Waifs for Mutts for Mental Health—a free afternoon of shelter volunteering and open conversation about mental health and community. Teens will help with shelter tasks and spend time with animals while learning about the benefits of showing up for something bigger than themselves. Research consistently shows that both animal interaction and community involvement have a measurable positive impact on teen mental health, and this event is built around exactly that.
Your teen will also earn volunteer hours for their participation (and further participation with the teen council)—a great addition to any college application or school volunteer requirement!
This is a low-pressure, welcoming event and a great introduction to Zero Reasons Why for teens who are curious but have never been involved before. No experience or prior connection to the organization needed.
