SUMMARY:Everyday Democracy: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness in Johnson County
DESCRIPTION:Democracy isn’t only written in founding documents or decided at the ballot box — it’s lived every day. For 250 years\, people across the United States have claimed\, challenged\, and redefined democratic ideals through their choices\, voices\, and communities. This new exhibition explores how everyday experiences of Johnson Countians have shaped the meaning of Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness — and asks what role each of us will play in democracy’s future.

SUMMARY:United We Play
DESCRIPTION:FROM SANDLOTS TO STADIUMS\, FIRST FAMILIES TO YOUR FAMILY\, EXPERIENCE AN ALL-NEW\, ALL-STAR EXHIBITION CELEBRATING THE SPORTING SPIRIT.\nAs Kansas City welcomes the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup\, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum invites you to explore United We Play: Kicking It with the Trumans—a new exhibition showcasing the power of sports to inspire and unite us. \n\nThis original show will feature an all-star lineup—hundreds of artifacts\, photos\, videos and stories featuring the Trumans and Kansas City’s sports teams\, including the Chiefs\, the Monarchs\, Blues\, A’s\, and Royals baseball clubs\, as well as Sporting KC and the KC Current soccer teams. \nDiscover the lifelong connection between the Trumans and legendary Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen. Be inspired by President Truman’s calisthenics routine\, as demonstrated at the “Truman Athletic Club” on the USS Missouri. And re-visit Truman’s harsh critique of Coach Hank Stram’s call after the Chiefs lost to the Raiders. \n“Our new exhibition will engage both Kansas Citians and people from around the world visiting for the FIFA World Cup matches\,” said Mark Adams\, director of the Truman Library. “The Trumans loved sports. Bess was quite an athlete as a young woman and President Truman loved horseshoes\, fishing\, and swimming. Of course\, Kansas City’s football\, baseball and soccer teams are a huge source of community pride\, so this exhibition brings all those elements together in a celebration of sports.” \nUnited We Play will showcase a remarkable collection of artifacts\, souvenirs and memorabilia\, including: \n\nNFL season passes made of 14k gold presented to President Truman\nChiefs owner Lamar Hunt’s ticket to the first game played in Arrowhead Stadium\nBess Wallace Truman’s ice skates\nPresident Truman’s cap from the Kansas City Blues baseball club\nKansas City Royals jacket and George Brett commemorative bat presented to President Ronald Reagan after the 1985 World Series Championship\n2015 Kansas City Royals World Series jersey given to White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest\, a Kansas City native\nPhoto of President Truman with baseball icons Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle\nSoccer ball from the 2013 Sporting Kansas City championship team\n\n“Sports spark our passion and create joy like few other things\,” said Alex Burden\, Executive Director of the Truman Library Institute. “We believe United We Play will generate pride\, nostalgia and a deeper understanding of the Trumans’ lives and how sports can unite our community and people around the world.” \nThe exhibition opens April 1 at the Truman Library at 500 West U.S. 24 Highway in Independence\, MO. Both United We Play and The Story of US: America at 250 (opening April 20) are included with admission. \nJoin us as Kansas City–and the world–play united.

SUMMARY:Historical Covered Wagon Tours
DESCRIPTION:Climb aboard an Old West\, mule-drawn wagon for an easy tour of the Independence Square\, home of three historic “westward ho” trails. \nSeveral historical itineraries are offered. They might include: two Civil War battle sites; the 1859 Jail that held Frank James; the slave-built 1827 courthouse; the home where Bess Truman was born; and Clinton’s Soda Fountain\, where Harry Truman had his first job. \nCrisscross two overlapping battlefields\, where your driver points out what happened there; circle the Bingham-Waggoner estate\, where the artist George Caleb Bingham destroyed a general with a paint brush; pass the 1879 train depot where Frank James stepped off of the train on his way to jail; and roll through the wagon swales left in the ground by pioneer wagons going west. \nOther possibilities include school field trips\, group tours\, and a chuck wagon feast (which may be included for groups of 15 or more — must plan in advance). \nLive an adventure with every turn of the corner on our museum on wheels! \nNote: The address is the 1859 Jail and is the pick-up point for the historical tour. Monday – Saturday with advanced reservations required 9 am – 4 pm\, evenings available upon request.
