Truman Presidential Library & Museum invites you to explore United We Play: Kicking It with the Trumans—a new exhibition showcasing the power of sports to inspire and unite us. \n\nThis original show will feature an all-star lineup—hundreds of artifacts\, photos\, videos and stories featuring the Trumans and Kansas City’s sports teams\, including the Chiefs\, the Monarchs\, Blues\, A’s\, and Royals baseball clubs\, as well as Sporting KC and the KC Current soccer teams. \nDiscover the lifelong connection between the Trumans and legendary Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen. Be inspired by President Truman’s calisthenics routine\, as demonstrated at the “Truman Athletic Club” on the USS Missouri. And re-visit Truman’s harsh critique of Coach Hank Stram’s call after the Chiefs lost to the Raiders. \n“Our new exhibition will engage both Kansas Citians and people from around the world visiting for the FIFA World Cup matches\,” said Mark Adams\, director of the Truman Library. “The Trumans loved sports. Bess was quite an athlete as a young woman and President Truman loved horseshoes\, fishing\, and swimming. SUMMARY:Historical Covered Wagon Tours
DESCRIPTION:Climb aboard an Old West\, mule-drawn wagon for an easy tour of the Independence Square\, home of three historic “westward ho” trails. \nSeveral historical itineraries are offered. They might include: two Civil War battle sites; the 1859 Jail that held Frank James; the slave-built 1827 courthouse; the home where Bess Truman was born; and Clinton’s Soda Fountain\, where Harry Truman had his first job. \nCrisscross two overlapping battlefields\, where your driver points out what happened there; circle the Bingham-Waggoner estate\, where the artist George Caleb Bingham destroyed a general with a paint brush; pass the 1879 train depot where Frank James stepped off of the train on his way to jail; and roll through the wagon swales left in the ground by pioneer wagons going west. \nOther possibilities include school field trips\, group tours\, and a chuck wagon feast (which may be included for groups of 15 or more — must plan in advance). \nLive an adventure with every turn of the corner on our museum on wheels! \nNote: The address is the 1859 Jail and is the pick-up point for the historical tour. Monday – Saturday with advanced reservations required 9 am – 4 pm\, evenings available upon request.

Audio guide available in English\, Spanish and French. \nThe Berlin Wall. A World Divided. is an exhibition by the Spanish company Musealia in collaboration with the Berlin Wall Foundation\, the German institution that looks after the historical legacy and memory of the victims of the communist regime in East Germany.

Kennedy and his successor\, President Lyndon B. Johnson\, in recognition of the national plight of Hispanics regarding lack of opportunities in business\, employment\, education\, health\, and myriad other areas of social development\, the US Congress passed a bill in 1964 calling for an annual celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Week (it was declared a month-long celebration in 1980).\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1972\, under President Richard M. Nixon’s 16-Point Program\, now called the Hispanic Employment Program\, a few Kansas City areas Hispanic federal employees\, in coordination with the Greater Kansas City Federal Executive Board initiated annual activities to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Week. The activities were held in various federal sector job sites. The Hispanic leaders eventually determined to extend the celebration into the metropolitan Hispanic community by organizing a parade from downtown Kansas City into downtown Armourdale\, Kansas.
