SUMMARY:Everyday Democracy: Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness in Johnson County
DESCRIPTION:Democracy isn’t only written in founding documents or decided at the ballot box — it’s lived every day. For 250 years\, people across the United States have claimed\, challenged\, and redefined democratic ideals through their choices\, voices\, and communities. This new exhibition explores how everyday experiences of Johnson Countians have shaped the meaning of Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness — and asks what role each of us will play in democracy’s future.

Bess was quite an athlete as a young woman and President Truman loved horseshoes\, fishing\, and swimming. Of course\, Kansas City’s football\, baseball and soccer teams are a huge source of community pride\, so this exhibition brings all those elements together in a celebration of sports.” \nUnited We Play will showcase a remarkable collection of artifacts\, souvenirs and memorabilia\, including: \n\nNFL season passes made of 14k gold presented to President Truman\nChiefs owner Lamar Hunt’s ticket to the first game played in Arrowhead Stadium\nBess Wallace Truman’s ice skates\nPresident Truman’s cap from the Kansas City Blues baseball club\nKansas City Royals jacket and George Brett commemorative bat presented to President Ronald Reagan after the 1985 World Series Championship\n2015 Kansas City Royals World Series jersey given to White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest\, a Kansas City native\nPhoto of President Truman with baseball icons Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle\nSoccer ball from the 2013 Sporting Kansas City championship team\n\n“Sports spark our passion and create joy like few other things\,” said Alex Burden\, Executive Director of the Truman Library Institute. “We believe United We Play will generate pride\, nostalgia and a deeper understanding of the Trumans’ lives and how sports can unite our community and people around the world.” \nThe exhibition opens April 1 at the Truman Library at 500 West U.S. 24 Highway in Independence\, MO. Both United We Play and The Story of US: America at 250 (opening April 20) are included with admission. \nJoin us as Kansas City–and the world–play united.

SUMMARY:Historical Covered Wagon Tours
DESCRIPTION:Climb aboard an Old West\, mule-drawn wagon for an easy tour of the Independence Square\, home of three historic “westward ho” trails. \nSeveral historical itineraries are offered. They might include: two Civil War battle sites; the 1859 Jail that held Frank James; the slave-built 1827 courthouse; the home where Bess Truman was born; and Clinton’s Soda Fountain\, where Harry Truman had his first job. \nCrisscross two overlapping battlefields\, where your driver points out what happened there; circle the Bingham-Waggoner estate\, where the artist George Caleb Bingham destroyed a general with a paint brush; pass the 1879 train depot where Frank James stepped off of the train on his way to jail; and roll through the wagon swales left in the ground by pioneer wagons going west. \nOther possibilities include school field trips\, group tours\, and a chuck wagon feast (which may be included for groups of 15 or more — must plan in advance). \nLive an adventure with every turn of the corner on our museum on wheels! \nNote: The address is the 1859 Jail and is the pick-up point for the historical tour. Monday – Saturday with advanced reservations required 9 am – 4 pm\, evenings available upon request.

SUMMARY:Neewollah Festival
DESCRIPTION:Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) began in 1919 as an effort to provide positive activities for kids of all ages in place of the typical Halloween pranks that occurred in the community of Independence\, Kansas. In the beginning the events centered on parades\, morning\, afternoon\, and night on October 31. The parades consisted mainly of decorated cars and carriages. Queens and princesses from area festivals rode in the parades\, along with our own Queen Neelah who was selected based on votes bought at a penny each. The Great Depression and World War II interrupted the Neewollah celebration but in 1958 four businessmen revived and elaborated on the Neewollah theme bringing it back as a 3-day celebration. \nToday Neewollah is the largest annual festival in Kansas. The city of Independence will grow from a town of around 8\,500 inhabitants to 75\,000 in the final days of the now 9-day celebration. Today’s celebration now includes 3 parades\, a Doo Dah Parade (adult Kiddie Parade)\, a Kiddie Parade and a Grand Parade. A Chili Cook-off\, Musical and Queen Neelah pageant also add to the festival activities. The main downtown is filled with 30 plus food vendors\, a large carnival and bandstand for nightly entertainment. The Arts and Craft show\, the Band Competition and Fun Run provide activities for everyone. Great bandstand entertainment brings a conclusion to the diligent efforts of over 500 community volunteers.

SUMMARY:Dia De Los Muertos Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Great Plains SPCA invites the community to honor cherished animal companions during a weeklong Día de los Muertos Pet Remembrance observance\, beginning Tuesday\, October 27\, with our opening night reception\, starting at 6:00 pm at Great Plains SPCA. \nIn partnership with La Mega KC\, Consulado de Mexico in Kansas City\, MO\, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City\, Mattie Rhodes Center\, and One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning. The celebration will feature a beautifully curated altar where the public is welcome to add photos\, toys\, treats\, and mementos honoring their beloved pets. The altar will remain open for visits throughout the week during Great Plains SPCA business hours. \nOctober 27 is recognized as Día de los Muertos for Pets\, a tradition that began in 2019 when a Mexican animal funeral services company proposed the date to honor lost animal companions. Rooted in ancient indigenous beliefs that dogs guide souls through the afterlife\, this modern practice celebrates the joy pets bring to our lives while providing comfort and healing to grieving pet families. \nHow to Participate:\n• Create an ofrenda: Bring a photo\, favorite toy\, or treat to place on the community altar.\n• Add personal touches: Include items that represent your pet’s unique personality.\n• Light a candle: Invite your pet’s spirit to join you in remembrance.\n• Share stories: Speak about your pet’s life and the memories you cherish.\n• Reflect: Take a moment to appreciate the unconditional love your pet gave.\n• Leave a gift: Donations to Great Plains SPCA will support lifesaving programs for pets and families in our community. \n“Pets are family\, and honoring their memory in a meaningful\, culturally rich tradition helps heal the heart\,” said Tam Singer\, CEO of Great Plains SPCA. “At Great Plains SPCA\, we are proud to serve our community not just through adoptions and animal care\, but by offering compassionate programs that connect people and pets in moments of both joy and remembrance.” \nThis event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own ofrenda items and to invite friends and family to share in this celebration of beloved pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge. Open hours for this event will mirror daily adoptions center operations\, Tuesday – Sunday 11AM – 7PM.
