Behind Closed Doors: The Truman Home
Park Visitor Center - Harry S Truman National Historic Site 223 N Main St, Independence, Missouri 64015
As part of its celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the City of Independence presents “Behind Closed Doors: The Truman Home.”
Shortly before the Truman Home opened to the public in 1984, National Park Service staff captured the home on Super 8 film, documenting how the home looked about 19 months following Mrs. Truman’s passing. The film shows how the first floor was to look, at the late Margaret Truman Daniel’s request, to visitors. In addition, the second floor and attic spaces are captured, showing the President’s wardrobe still there, and thousands of personal belongings as they were before being inventoried and cataloged. Watch this one-hour film and discuss the state of the home and the impact its condition had on the interpretation and management of it by the National Park Service
