Coding & Cupcakes | November | Website Development Workshop

Join us for our monthly coding series, Coding & Cupcakes. Parents and daughters are invited to attend sessions to learn about code and bond while working on programming projects together. Our mission is to get girls excited about code at a young age and to dispel any notion that coding isn't for girls. Did we mention there are cupcakes, yummy, yummy, cupcakes!

In this workshop attendees will learn the basics of website development using various tools and languages: Chrome, Github, CodeSandbox, HTML, and CSS. Your daughter will change text, images, fonts and colors on her own website and even deploy it.

Chrome is a cross-platform web browser developed by Google. Chrome contains a lot of helpful pre-built in tools for developers, called DevTools, they allow you to inspect the code and breakdown elements of the website you are viewing.

Github is a file or code sharing service that allows you to collaborate with different people. Github is a highly used software which is typically used for version control - it allows you to save changes you make to your code and go back to previous versions of your code.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is a markup language used to describe the structure and layout of a web page. HTML is used to describe the visual appearance of a document or web page to be displayed by an internet browser. HTML consists of elements and these elements tell the browser how to display the content. The elements are represented by tags and usually have opening and closing tags that surround and give meaning to the content. Tags label pieces of content to be displayed but browsers do not display the HTML tags, it only uses the tags to render the content of the page.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets ) is the language used for describing the presentation of web pages, including colors, layouts, and fonts. It allows one to adapt the presentation to different types of devices, such as large screens, small screens or printers. CSS is independent of HTML and can be used with any XML-based markup language written. In this workshop your daughter will learn how CSS is used to describe the style of an HTML document by telling those HTML elements how they should be displayed on the screen. CSS is a key technology of the World Wide Web, alongside HTML and JavaScript.

CodeSandbox is an online code editor that helps you create web applications from beginning stages to publishing it so others can view it online. A code editor makes writing and reading code easier by differentiating the elements and routines so programmers can more easily look at their code. In this workshop CodeSandbox will be used to deploy our website – that will allow other people to view and interact with them online.

Feeling overwhelmed with too much technology going on or ‘computery’ lingo? Don’t worry! That is what this workshop is for! There will be lots of guidance and support for those with little to no coding experience and everyone gets to move at their own pace. So parents bring your daughters and join the Coding & Cupcake fun!

One ticket per parent/adult chaperone - free

No coding experience necessary

One wifi-enabled laptop between each mother and daughter is required

The minimum age requirement is the ability to read, type, and use a mouse

Delicious cupcakes from BabyCakes will be provided for coding fuel!
